Did you win the lottery or something?

This is probably one of the biggest myths of long term traveling - that it requires gobs and gobs of money. In reality, the airfare is the most expensive part and then I've heard that its possible to live off of about $20/day average for transportation, food and lodging. Of course, "transportation" is by public transport (an alien concept to us Michiganders), "food" consists of groceries that can be hauled around in a backpack, and "lodging" is in campsites and hostels where it is adviseable to wear shoes in the shower. Not exactly luxury living, but thats the cost of seeing the world. Most who have done it would agree that it was well worth the sacrifice. Would you?

Hey Michelle, good luck getting ready! Sure you'll have a great trip. I wanted to say, just be easy on yourself moneywise, especially at first. Often it has been very possible for me to travel around on 20 dollars a day (and less), but it took me a bit of time to work out what I was happy spending, a bit of time to get used enough to travelling to go without various expenditures... Sure, once you've eased yourself in, everything will be fine, but better to blow two days budget once in a while than freak out over the strain of keeping the money belt locked up.

But, you're completely right, it all is so worth the required sacrifices.
