Crashing Glaciers

We finished our stay in El Calafate with a visit to the Perito Moreno Glacier about 60km away. Both this and Glacier Gray which we had climbed on in Torres del Paine are part of the greater Southern Patagonian Ice Field - the third largest frozen area in the world (Antarctica and Greenland are #1 and #2 respectively). Perito Moreno has the unique distinction of being one of the few glaciers in the world that is actually ADVANCING.

It is constantly running into a peninsula of rock to the south of it and as a result it is a very active glacier with peices great and small constantly falling off. It is hard to grasp the scale of the glacier as you stand on the side of this peninsula and watch it. From where it sits in the water to the top it is over 80 meters (close to 200ft) tall. Even small chunks falling off made huge noises and we figured that they were probably the size of a VW bug even though they looked tiny!
