February 13, 2005Tierra del Fuego
We have reached the end of the world ! Now what ? We are now in Ushuaia , the most southernly city in the world. Tierra del Fuego , land of fire , so called because when the European explorers sailed to this area in the 16th century they found people who wore few clothes but built campfires , even in their canoes , for warmth ! So we have gone as far as we can go. We have hurried down here with thoughts of possibly going to Antatica as several people en route had told us we shouldn't miss it , a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We were told there are usually last-minute deals for US$2500 . So yesterday we went to investigate. We found we would have to wait over 2 weeks to travel at that price or pay US$4500 to go this week. It looked incredible but neither of those was really an option for us. So now we must decide where to go next. Ushuaia itself is a beautiful city surronded by mountains & looking out over the Drake Straits which separate the Pacific & Atlantic Oceans. The sun is still shining & it is still warm . Iam so surprised to be so warm so close to the South Pole ! We didn't expect so much beauty at the end of the world ! Tomorrow we visit Tierra del Fuego National Park . Comments
