Kyleakin

After a beautiful day in Flodigarry (during which I did nothing but stare at the amazing views), I took the bus to Kyleakin (pronounced Kai-LAA-kin). I stayed at a really great hostel, called the Dun Caan Hostel. It was owned by a Scotsman and his Norwegian wife. What a homey place they had and I really felt like I had a temporary break from all the usual hostels.

Anyway, when I got in, the Scotsman told me that it was low tide enough to go visit Castle Moil. I got some great pics of the ruins, which are said to have been built by a Norse princess married to a MacCloud (I think) chief. She would run a chain across the thin waterway and tax everyone who wanted to pass, with the exception of her Norse countrymen. Rumor also has it that after each ship paid their tax, she would flash them, hence her nickname of Saucy Mary.

After that little excursion, I took a walk over the controversial Skye Bridge. The toll to cross the bridge is £5.70 each way, which is about $9 US. Apparently the company that was building the bridge in the early 1990s went under and The Bank of America bailed out the project. Basically all the tolls now go to the BOA and the Skye residents are VERY touchy about it. I got a sense for this when I asked two older ladies I met on the bridge about it. They got all bent out of shape about the whole topic. Oops, wrong topic! Actually, I already knew this, but I wanted to see what they would say.

I polished off the day by having a few pints with an Irishman who was finishing up university in Edinburgh. He had worked in Montauk for a summer and he was telling me about the horrible living conditions they had out there bc there was no decent place for hotel workers to live. He didn't seem to bent out of shape about it though.

Not the most exciting day, but not bad in the slightest!

Is the Dun Caan the hostel near the IYH? Wooden front, big window streetside? I seem to remember a place like that from when I was there.

Walking along the shore late at night, and looking at all the lights across the water, was one of my favorite things to do. It was so quiet in Kyleakin, especially around 11pm and midnight. So peaceful, and though in a town, still feeling so far away from the "civilized" world.

I remember the saucy mary story- are you somewhere you and I went? (it is hard to keep all the Scottish town names straight.) Perhaps we were told the story on our way to Skye? I remeber going to Skye...lovely place...but alas, I am in Jersey (pronounced JOI-see)..haha.. I like how you keep posting the phonetic pronouniation...:)

Hey Ant, nope the Dun Caan is down further along the pier, away from the SYHA. It's a small little place.

Steph, yes you were in Kyleakin. We drank at the Saucy Mary Pub.

Vanessa, Thailand is right on the equator. It's always warm. Trust me, come on your own. You won't regret it. NOthing against Joey, but it will be more worth while. I doubt he would want to sit through temples and palaces and LONG ass bus rides, not to mention fabric shopping.

Hey Claudia, I read your post card. What a beautiful, serene place that seemed, especially in contrast to the corporate prison we reside in and you escaped from. You definitely have the right idea. I’ve had it up to here (my hand is way above my head) with corporate America. I grow tired of the bullshit, but alas, I have “promises to keep…” Anyway, I’m sorry for venting.

I’ve been reading your journal entries pretty regularly. I feel like I’m reading a serialized novel from the eighteen-hundreds – I look forward to each installment. Although too brief, it’s a nice escape from the daily ATTi crap…Oops, I’m venting again, sorry. Anyhow, the writing is great and I love the stories of the locals you meet and the tidbits of history. Keep it up.

I just wanted to say hello again. Take care and keep those postcards coming, Mike

Hey Mike. Glad you're enjoying it. I'm enjoying writing it. :-) You think Atti is corporate??? Try working for a Fortune 500 company which has a "policy" n how to pick your nose correctly. Atti is CAKE compared to my last hellhole!!!!

Hey Claudia. To tell you the truth, I wouldn’t mind a policy for picking my nose – at least I’d be doing it right after all these years! Atti is CAKE? A stale, crumbling one perhaps. The problem with Atti is there are very few clear policies. Only when something goes wrong are we reminded of a policy that only exists in one individuals head -- and reminded in a nasty, arrogant way I might add. I’m just tired of getting a ration-of-shit for things I had no control over. In fact, the wheels for many of the problems were set in motion by “the powers that be”, but they never own up to anything. Trust me Claudia, there’s a side of Atti you were fortunate enough not to be a part of….Anyway, enough of that. So, where did you work before Atti? For some reason (I don’t know why) I thought Atti was your first job out of school. Bye, Mike

Hey Mike. I worked for Johnson Controls for about 1.5 yrs before I realized I was NOT cut out for "Corporate America". They paid alright, but I hated putting on "the mask" every morning. There were days I just didn't go to work. It was horrible. Atti was cake (at least for me). No shit about my nosering, my hair, my clothes, my attitude, etc.

so joey wants to come now that he saw some pictures and his friends were like..how could you not want to go? i want you to tell me if you'd rather me come alone if you think that him being there is going to be less fun for me and you as far as the sister bonding thing goes.
but i just don't want to come home with these ridiculously beautiful pictures and him be upset that he missed out. it is his first paid vacation time from his job so..i want him to actually go somewhere he would never go otherwise..but if you don;t want him there.....i understand
