June 4, 1989

For those interested in reading about Tiananmen and the anniversary, here are some articles I found interesting in the world (mainly U.S.) press today:

Tiananmen memory still haunts demonstrators still in China, Washington Post

An icon, then he's gone, Los Angeles Times

China hides dissidents for Tiananmen anniversary, New York Times

The Guardian (U.K) has an interesting archive on China that has stories dating back to the beginning of the 20th century. It also includes the original June 4, 1989 dispatch from their foreign correspondents.

And, finally, from the People's Daily, there is no mention of the anniversary, as was expected, but there is an interesting antidote (i.e. propoganda) to the foreign press coverage of the day, College students optimistic about people-loving government.

The story includes interesting statements like, "(students say) the central leadership is a down-to-earth group seeking truth, an exploitive and innovative collective, a resolute and trustworthy collective, a collective drawing close to people and loving people."
