Hangzhou photos

hz-characters.jpg
Welcome to my photo gallery of Hangzhou images. Although some are already on my web site, I though I would upload a few more everyday scenes to my blog.

I am not at West Lake often, especially on those beautiful sunny weekend days when all of China is at West Lake, but here is a photo I took this spring with many trees in bloom.

More spring flowers. I think this is a magnolia, from one of the many trees near my apartment.

In case you forget to enjoy civilization, friendly signs around town will remind you that there's plenty of civilization here.

The Hangzhou skyline as seen from the banks of the Grand Canal.

A woman washing clothes in one of Hangzhou's many canals. There are parts of Hangzhou where you're not sure if you're in China or Baghdad (see rubble next to apartment).

A typical apartment building in my neighborhood.

The neighborhood militia protecting building 75.

Rainy days don't put a damper on bike use here. People just pull out their trusty multi-colored ponchos and cruise to their next destination.

A modern family climbs in their car after a day shopping at the nearest Guo Mei (or Gome, as we affectionately refer to it) Home Appliance Store.

A L'Oreal display in front of the In Time Department Store, a massive consumer paradise filled with pairs of pants and dresses that cost more than my monthly salary.

Checking out another display in front of In Time.

The neigborhood Hangzhou forgot to develop. Outside the city center, this is a pretty common neighborhood.

A bike loaded down with containers of some sort. Other workers haul mountains of styrofoam, cardboard, furniture and garbage, all on three-wheel bikes.
