July 07, 2005V is for Verona and Venice and Vienna
This is going back in time a little bit... When we left Gubbio, we headed north to Verona, then to Venice for a night; then we took a night train and woke up in Vienna. Fair Verona was a cute city. We strolled around the heart of town and took in the sights. We saw "Juliet's House", with a balcony and a courtyard with a little statue of Juliet. We saw star crossed lovers sitting along the river bank. Verona is famous for its summer opera season, with the shows performed in a Roman Arena. Here is one of the squares in town. Here we are in front of one of the bridges over the river that flows through the city. Here is a view from a hill across the river. From Verona, it was a quick train ride in the morning to Venice, which was really cool. It was Matt's first time, and Robin's second time in Venice. We did most of the major sights: St. Mark's Square, the Doge's Palace, the Accademia Gallery, the Rialto Bridge; and of course, we wandered among all the canals and narrow alleys. Here is a gondola on the Grand Canal. Venice was crowded, but still very beautiful. Next stop was to Vienna, Austria. We got cultured in Vienna, and attended an opera at the state opera house. We got standing places up in the balconies, and they had English translations on little screens in front of us so we could follow along. After the opera, we went to the famous Sacher Hotel and got a Sacher chocolate torte. It was yummy. Sightseeing in Vienna included St. Stephen's Dom (cathedral), a museum dedicated to a local artist, Hundertwasser (here we are in front). We also rode the tram around the heart of the old city. We had good food, beer and wine. One night we had dinner in a classic cellar restaurant. It was after we left Vienna that we went to Prague and met up with Matt's folks. Comments
