April 16, 2005Greece-ian Formula
We completed our tour of Turkey, and now we are "Island Hopping" around Greece. We are experiencing the tranquility of the off season here, and it's been a welcome relief from the tour bus hoards of eastern Turkey. The formula has been do little, eat a lot. They serve crusty loaves of bread with every meal. After a couple of very touristic days in Turkey, in which we were herded in tour groups through the ruins of Ephesus, saw the final home of Mary (you know, That Mary, Mother of God...) and then out to see the "Cotton Castle" of Pamukkale, which is made of calcium bi-carbonate. This interesting fact is the one of the only ones which our guide repeated to us about ten times that day!! It was a lot of bus travel because we were staying in one small city, Selcuk and visiting other cities-Ephesus and Pamukkale. On the day that we toured Pamukkale, we spoke Four, count 'em, four languages! English, Turkish, Swahili and Thai. The first two are kinda obvious. We were able to speak Swahili because there were seven women on our tour who were living in Kenya. We spoke Thai with two (other) women from Thailand who we met on the bus back from Pamukkale to Selcuk. It was very cool. So now we are chilling out on the island of Naxos. We arrived via ferry from Samos Island, which is a gateway from Turkey. There are very few tourists here, and about 1/4 of the shops are still closed from the winter season. So we are getting a decent rate on our room, which has a great view of the sea and a balcony and a kitchenette where Robin has been fixing up culinary masterpieces from the delicious local produce (think, olives, butter, tomatoes, eggplant and spinach with feta cheese and cheap wine). The weather is spring-like, warm days and cool nights. No swimming, yet. The water is very blue and clean. We are having a great time doing nothing. Except plan the next month in Italy and Croatia.
