March 05, 2005A Good Start!
Ah, Africa. It's been a very pleasant change of pace. When taking the night train from Goa to Mumbai, we met some great travellers from Seattle! Kelsey and Christian were very fun company for our last night in India. After saying farewell to India, we were happy to reach Nairobi, Kenya. We spent one night in Nairobi in a peaceful residential neighborhood shared by a few embassies. We then travelled by mini bus to Moshi, Tanzania. Moshi is at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. It would have great views of the mountain, if it wasn't hidden by the clouds. Matt was lucky enough to see zebras already, on the 5 hour drive from Nairobi, but Robin was asleep! The people are super friendly here, without being overly pushy or blatently staring at us, as was often the case in India. We no longer feel "on-show" here, and its been a refreshing change. We ate at a local restaurant today (more meaty than India!) and no one stopped eating to look at us. It has been hot here, they are waiting for the rains, so it is very humid and warm. We have been lucky enough to stay with friends of Donovan, of BNA fame. Pastor Kennedy Kisanga and his wife Anna have been most hospitable to us and we have seen Kennedy's projects in a nearby village, coffee plants, banana trees. We have met some wonderful people associated with his church and at their farm. We are arranging a safari to head out to the National Parks for five days. We expect it will be rustic, camping style, but will be very cool to see real big game, like they call it here! We are also hoping to work with the Kilimanjaro Porters Association on a little volunteer work before we head back to Nairobi on the 21st of March. Comments

Posted by: amy on March 8, 2005 03:34 PMHi guys! I'll be sure not to put India on my traveling list. Sounds like Africa is much more peaceful and friendly. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MATT! Enjoy keeping up on your travels. Take good care DI Posted by: Diane and Jim on March 9, 2005 08:13 AMHey Guys! Glad you made it to Africa safely and to hear that you are enjoying a change of pace! It was awesome to meet up with you in Mumbai and share some bits of home! We look forward to seeing you in the good old PNW someday - and then we can share some bits from al our travels! Enjoy yourselves and take care. We leave India ourselves on the 22nd, and it comes with mixed feelings. Posted by: Kelsey and Christian on March 11, 2005 12:07 AMHappy Birthday to You - Matthew! How is your 38th Birthday?? Are you going to eat bugs instead of birthday cake? Mom and Dad are on their way to the next grandchild stop in Atlanta after spending time with our "kids". Mom remembers you at less than 5 pounds and so helpless. You've come a long way baby now that you're traveling the world! Happy Birthday Matt! have a fun one! Did you lose your shirt or was it stolen in India. The only reason I ask is you haven't taken any pictures lately and I thought maybe you could only have your picture taken with that one shirt.
