September 26, 2004Visit to Vientiane, Lao
Our next stop was Vientiane, the capital of Lao and our first Servas host After yet another bus journey from Luang Prabang, (10 hours), we arrived in NOTE: We also voted in Vientiane, Laos, at the American Embassy. We were expecting lots of Americans sitting around, talking about sports, but what we found was a very sterile concrete bunker and a very nice Lao staffer to give our ballots to.. After two days of sightseeing in the capital, we headed back into Northeast Thailand. Pat gave us the suggestion of staying at the Ban Thai Guest House in Tha Bo, which is just over the Mekong River in Thailand.. The resort was very nice and quiet, we were one of only two couples staying in the nice bungalows, which were located on the Mekong River. We stayed for three nights, just hanging out and eating great food cooked by the owner, a Japanese woman who lived in France for about 20 years, who then ended up in Thailand. Our next stop after this was Korat, with expectations to head to the Population and Development Association (PDA) resort called Cabbages and Condoms. The resort is so named because the PDA began its work in the 1970's based on family planning and food distribution for the less advantaged areas of Thailand, namely the northeast. The resort would be where we could visit a silkweaving village and see Phanom Rung, ruins which are dated back to the Khmer Dynasty, same as Angkor Wat in Cambodia. More on northeast Thailand next entry... Comments
Hi Matt and Robin: Glad you found your way back to civilization, we hadn't heard from you in awhile and I was anxiously awaiting your lastest update. I can't believe the kinds of things you have been experiencing, I'm so jealous, but you are alot more adventurous than I think I'd ever be. Posted by: Don and Pam on September 27, 2004 01:34 PMHi guys - was getting just a little nervous - not hearing from you, but sounds like your travels are getting pretty plushy. Glad to hear from you. Love ya - Ma Posted by: Gloria on September 27, 2004 03:20 PMHey you kids! Great photo (and your hair is so long Robin)! Katelin and I were just taking a "chat break" and I really wanted to tell you a work story... Chris is heading to the east coast! She is following her heart and we are very happy for her. It seems that there won't be an east coast branch of AEA, so there will be some changes to the company as Chris transitions over the next 6 mo.s or so. Right now, I'm burried with IAMPs so I have to get back at it. The "host committee" meets here tonight to get raffle baskets ready for the Cascadia conference's reception next Mon. Fun! Stay safe...
