Hope for Women

July 31st, 2007

So, it’s come to my attention that my recent India entries, while true, missed a lot of the wonderful and “normal,” (i.e. not scary, outrageous etc.) experiences that I had this trip. One of the main purposes of our traveling up north was to visit and film some of the Fair Trade company, Hope for Women. The business, in which women attain self-sufficiency, dignity etc. while handcrafting greeting cards with flowers from the base of the Himalayas, is quickly expanding, and the idea was to document some background for possible promotional use, or just for the “records.”P6060264 (Small).JPG Read the rest of this entry »

Traveling Cheap

July 30th, 2007

So, this is a blurry picture (click on it and it’s bigger) of two lovely boys we met on the banks of the the Ganga in Rishikesh. They wanted to sell us flowers and fish food to put in the river — normallyP6130544 (Small).JPG I would have been embarrassed and somehow feel like I was a sucker, Read the rest of this entry »

I’m in the US (I think)

July 30th, 2007

So, I flew into JFK and am staying with my cousin in Manhattan for two days before going home It’s a long story (when has that stopped me before?) but essentially I had about 10 hours to wander around NYC, and it occured to me that in many ways it’s similar to India.

(Here’s a terrible picture of me to add some color until i can get more pics. Um, i guess it relates tot he entry because it is the the woods in Rishikesh, which, while not NYC, could have been in the US or India. P6100511 (Small).JPG Read the rest of this entry »

“I’m too scared to eat South Indian food”

July 25th, 2007

Im home, well not really actually. VT is definitely home, and I’m in NYC, which is DEFNITELY NOT home, actually I might feel more at home in some parts of India, but you get the idea (but that is the subject of the next entry). Im listening to ( i know, this is pathetic, itunes Radio “bombay beats” which is basically what would be considered by not even that snobby music snobs to be terrible Hindi pop songs, which are quite fun to listen to. Really, im happy to be back and not regretting it but still, i caught myself reading my cousin’s “NY Cheap eats” article and the “Tiffin Wallah” S. indian Veg food caught my attention, and i was half planning to find it, until i realized that I was just in India, where i could, and only sometimes did, eat South indian food and, even “cheap” in NY cannot compart to all u can eat, for about 15 cents!!. Education and Tradition can co-exist

July 25th, 2007

Wow, what a lame name for this entry, but it is actually what im trying to write about, so oh well, no need to be cryptic and try to write in my version of Hindi. In Puttaparthy, i met up with some of our dear friends from the US, the Mother, from Vermont, her son, daughter-in-law and their two young children. Though, having other very well educated, and also traditiona/religious Indian/Hindu friends, I knew that the two were not contradictory, but for some reason, spending time with these friends, I was struck anew by this not earthshattering, but often overlooked relationship, I’ll share a few examples. Sarees Vrs. Salvar Kameez and a quick note

July 15th, 2007

Hola, so Evan nicely brought to my attention that the recent entries are password protected and not with elephant. Sorry, im sort of unorganized and dont have a pin drive or way to store my writing and I want it all together for when i get back so I’ve been writing some more private, journal type entries recently from prashanti, mostly rambly stream of consciousness thoughts and some experiences), but here’s one for all to read:

it’s like “un poco”

July 9th, 2007

Okay, this is from Agra, but I got behind. Basically, though most of Agra was overwhelming and we couldnt even leave the hotel without the someone saying “where are you going?” and then trying to convince us that we should use their restaurant, driver, etc instead, we did find a rather chil rikshaw driver. A(hhhhhhhhhh)gra

June 26th, 2007

So, as I’ve said most of my trip thus far has been relatively hassle free, nice people, reasonable prices, etc etc etc. Then we went to Agra, (exasperated sigh inserted after the first syllable to represent, well, exaperation) but some fun was mixed in too. Read the rest of this entry »
