A day at the Naschmarkt

My friend Gabby and I (Gabby's from Equador, we met in Venice, and she lives in Germany, so I'm never sure how to say, "My friend Gabby from...") went to Vienna's local farmer's market today. I frequent it for produce, but today is Saturday, so in addition to the farmer's market, the Florhmarkt occupies the space of several blocks. The Florhmarkt, or Flea Market, was craziness. It was so unorganized that mountains of fur jackets spewed over like an erupting volcano. People bumped into eachother, each attempting to be the winner who made the great find of the day. I was sure it was a hunting ground for pickpockets and scam artists, so we continued on with a quicker pace until we arrived at the veggie section of the market, where the vegetarian in me finds a few moments of heaven every week....

It's really difficult to price-shop at the Naschmarkt because each grocer posts his prices differently. One man's sign advertises egglant at 1/4 kilo for 1.50 euro. The next sign I see sells the vegtable by the pound. Another offers 1/2 kilos for 3.60. It gets a little jumbled in my mind as I try to compare. I think I did pretty well today except for the green pepper that cost me 1.20!
Today we stopped for falafel sandwiches at a stand in the market. As we continued our shopping simultaneously with our eating, a young man yelled out from behind his colorful mounds of vegetables in German, "You look so beautiful eating your donners (sandwiches)!" We couldn't help but laugh at his failed attempt at wooing us. Men can be so silly.
Even though Saturdays are crazy busy, I loved going today because the market was so alive with people. It takes the pressure off of being the only person shopping on Monday afternoon, which is normally the case. I love what this city has to offer. Everywhere has farmer's market, but nowhere else in the world has the Naschmarkt.

We loved reading about the nachtsmarkt! Morgan, you're such a tease to phone me at work and not leave a callback #. If you have one, I'd call you because I do miss you and you've been on my mind a lot lately - is it the mardi gras connection or some other psychic link? Anyway, I'd love to talk with you more and email just doesn't do it for me.
