September 30, 2004Island to Ireland: My journey back to me
My travel wanderlust began over 20 years ago. I was barely out of my teens and had landed an awesome job with Warner Bros. Records in Detroit. During those years, i had many chances to hang out with cool, creative and (some) crazy rock stars. Some, like U2, were just beginning their careers. Most of us were green as the Irish grass. It was an awesome time to be young, cute, single, and immersed in music. I discovered early on that music was, indeed, the universal language. A few years later, I went to England to visit Peter Gabriel who i was dating at the time. I was hooked on exploring new places, great ethnic food, rich cultures, inspiring art, and people from far and near. And always, everwhere i roamed, there was new music to explore. It was the bridge between those of us who couldn't communicate through spoken language. Since that time (and after leaving the music industry 10 years ago) I've been fortunate enough to travel to over 30 countries. Back in 1981, when I'd promised Bono that i'd make it over to Ireland (back in the day....when i could still find him at home and he'd write back to my letters.....) It's taken me over 20 years, and I'm now based in beautiful Maui, Hawaii, but finally I'm able to go to "the Mother Country". I have the month of October to discover the part of my heritage that is Irish firsthand, to drink Guiness in the oldest Irish pubs, to hear old pennywhistlers play traditional tunes and to discover new Irish songwriters....and to make a toast to all the times, years earlier, when I'd made promises to myself to see James Joyce's homeland, Enya's lyrical roots, my great- greatgrandmother's Kilkenny streets and everything green and gaelic in between. This Maui girl was going home.... Irie-land, here I come! Erin Go Bragh. Comments
