Tsum valley trekking itinerary for 16 april (18 days) – hoping for good weather

April 14th, 2011

Tonight we were invited to our guides home – Wow what an nice experience! They treated us like royalty with a special New Years dinner (by the way today is the first day of the new year! – everything here operates on the Nepali calender and the new year stats today, they have just had 2 days of celebrations which were quite something) We saw the old house and the new house. Even Alex had to duck his head under most of the doors. The cooked over an open fire on the top level so the roof of the kitchen was all black. The house is in a building of many houses all attached together about 10 feet wide and 4 stories high, wooden structure with brick outside.

Our trekking plan for the next 18 days is in the Tsum valley. This area opened up in 2008 to trekking and hopefully it will be interesting for some Tibetan culture since it is very close to the Tibetan border. We might also get up to the Ganesh Himal Base Camp if the weather is good enough. The highest elevation will be around 4500m which is not too high and shouldn’t cause any problems for the kids – they have often been around 4000m.
The preliminary itinerary is as follows:
april 16 – drive 10 hrs from Kathmandu to Arughat, day 2 – trek Arughat to Liding (4hrs), day 3 – trek to Machhakhola (5 hrs), day4 – trek to Jagat (6 hrs), day5 – trek to Lokpa (5 hrs), day6 – trek to Cunling (4 hrs), day7 – trek to Chhokangparo (8 hrs), day8 – trek to Chhule-Nile (5 hrs), day9 – trek to Mu Gompa (3 hrs), day10- trek to Dupchet, day 11 – trek to Rachen Gompa, day 12 – Dumje, day 13 – up to Ganesh Himal Base Camp if all goes well, then the next days are back down the valley (but it is pretty up and down even though the general tendency is down!)

We made it to Nepal

April 12th, 2011

We left Bali for Bangkok on sunday, we had a night in Bangkok before taking the plane for Kathmandu. Everything when smoothly. We are in Bhaktapur in a pretty neat guest house. We have a great view on the temple square. (see pictures) Our first trek is going to be up the Tsum valley. This area of Nepal was open to trekking in 2008, so hopefully it is not going to be to develop. We have to carry tents since tea house are not available on some stretch of the trail.

Heidi’s journal march 2011

April 9th, 2011

Beach and diving north Bali

April 7th, 2011

Hello all, We hve just spent a nice hot 4 days in a beautiful guesthouse on the north side of Bali. We had a very pretty room with a view over the pool and into the mountains. It was quite hot … almost too much. It is understandable why most people here don’t do very much, just hang around. We had a day of snorkling on the reefs in the National Park, very nice coral and fish. Then we went scuba diving (2 dives), the children also. Heidi and Alex did great for their first ever underwater dive. We found a restaurant with very friendly owner and we ate their every day, by the end we didn’t even need to order, he knew our favorite foods! The kids would split one bottle of Fanta Strawberry as if they were having a glass of wine, very relaxed. The only road thru the town was the main road around the island so it was a bit busy. We have seen 2 accidents so far, blood on the road. Last one was a drunk guy that got hit by a scooter (the roads are full of scooters!). The beach was interesting with the local fishing boats that go out a night with the lights to catch the few remaining fish.
Today we got a ‘Taxi’ up to a high lake area (Bedugal or Candicuning) and it is actually cool, which is a nice change. We are off to visit a ‘botanical garden’.
Take care everyone! Hugs to all! Heather

Enjoying Bali after some rest

March 31st, 2011

We are catching up on some sleep and feeling more alive. United airline lost half of one tandem
in transit somewhere. We should get it back tonight hopefully! Otherwise we just walked around town (Ubud) yesterday. The main interest for the kids was the market. Ubud is turning into a busy tourist place.

Tuesday we had a nice walk around the rice fields and got used to the heat a bit more. We are still on Bromont time – we wake up at midnight and can’t get back to sleep. Alex played on his iPod from midnight to 6:00 am!!

Wed: hired a driver for the day and went to the biggest temple in Bali – Besakih. We were lunky because the Balenese are celebrating now and it was full of people dressed up to pray – (much more lively than the Maya temples). We had a traffic jam waiting for a cremation procession to pass – interesting for the children. Then we went to the beach – quiet but not amazing
