nice Nice

September 12th, 2006

Written at 5:46, 9-12-06

I like Nice. Nice is nice. Cleaner than Marseilles, it offers all the same amenities—good shopping, warm waters, beautiful sights—without the constant sense that you’re about to be mugged.

Risks of Insanity

September 11th, 2006

Written at 6:20 PM, 9-11-06

I managed to rouse myself at exactly 8:40 the morning following the beach excursion, which happened to be a mere five minutes before the hostel’s breakfast ended. I’d been warned by the hostel’s inhabitants that the breakfast was a sad affair, but it took actually attending breakfast to realize the truth of this.

Wild Nights on the Mediterranean

September 10th, 2006

9:28 AM, 9-10-06

Barcelona—wow. What a city. This place could challenge Dublin’s Temple Bar for night life (& partying). At least, I suspect it could. It’s really impossible for me to say since I didn’t actually leave the hostel during my first night there. Instead, I partied with a bunch of Aussies, kiwis (New Zealanders), and Canadians. A Trying Couple Days

September 7th, 2006

3:37 PM, 9-7-06

To say it’s been an interesting couple days would be a misstatement—“a trying couple days” is probably more appropriate. I’ve got a lot of time to cover, so expect this blog to be a long one. Simply put, I’ll begin with the beginning.

Language Barriers

September 5th, 2006

10:17 PM, 9-5-06

We finished the battle tour and Ashley and I returned to the bed and breakfast in Bayeux. We decided to go out to a nice restaurant for a genuine French dinner. We browsed around, checking virtually every menu in town until settling on a restaurant that was both classy and affordable. Read the rest of this entry »

A Necessary Sacrifice

September 4th, 2006

5:14 PM, 9-4-06

It’s difficult to convey the magnitude and emotional tour de force of the experience I had on this day. I suppose I’ll go through each step of the day and then try to sum up the significance and enormity at the end after I’ve related the details of the places I visited.

That’s One Big Tower

September 4th, 2006

3:01 PM, 9-4-06

So the Eiffel Tower. It really takes seeing the tower to truly realize it. It’s just so big. I’d seen pictures, of course, but I’d never really comprehended the immensity of the great steel creature. (At least, I think it’s steel…) As I had wandered Paris, it had loomed in the distance, as if it were some kind of embodiment of modernity watching over the antiquity of Paris. From a distance, it had not appeared particularly humungous. Read the rest of this entry »

Paris, City of…well you know.

September 2nd, 2006

11:41 PM, 9-2-06

Paris. Oh, Paris. It doesn’t take an ounce of imagination to see as clear as day why it is known as the city of love. Like a fine wine, it gets better with time, infusing with taste, color, and age. Elegance and romance, modern styles, it’s unlike any other city I’ve visited, which is not to say it is better, but merely that it is in a whole other realm.

Beware of Ryanair

September 2nd, 2006

9:36 AM, 9-2-06

So I’m in Paris.

I left Edinburgh shortly after writing my last lengthy entry. I had been ambivalent as to whether I wanted to do a Highlands tour of Scotland, head to Amsterdam as originally planned, or go to Paris. Paris, at the time, seemed the least likely of options. After spending some time online researching my options, though, I found that the 16 hour ferry ride from Newcastle to Amsterdam was expensive, as was the highlands tour. History Misplaced

August 31st, 2006

11:51 AM, 8/31/06

Nothing quite so poetic to write today (as opposed to yesterday’s post). Things have been pretty uneventful here in Edinburgh. I’m trying to figure out what the heck I’m going to do with myself. But more on that later.
