Well, in Germany the weather finally caught up with me. I suppose this was to be expected with traveling north to less temperate climates, but it doesn’t mean I need to be happy about it. I arrived in Freiburg in mid-afternoon, thinking I was prepared to find my way to the hostel suggested in my guidebook. [read on]

I returned to the hostel for a little R&R after my hike up Harder Kulm. Returning to my room, I met a pair of guys, Jesse and John, who were from Seattle and had just finished law school. Written at 4:50 PM, 9-15-06 I had an early night after writing my last blog. I checked out my new travel guide for a while, trying to figure out where to go and what to do next. I also spoke with ... [Continue reading this entry]

Written at 9:32 PM, 9-14-06 !CAUTION! RANTS TO FOLLOW. Before I get into describing my exploits in Monaco and my travels to Switzerland, I have to ask, is it any wonder that most “foreigners” have the impression of Americans being loud and ... [Continue reading this entry]

nice Nice

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006
Written at 5:46, 9-12-06 I like Nice. Nice is nice. Cleaner than Marseilles, it offers all the same amenities—good shopping, warm waters, beautiful sights—without the constant sense that you’re about to be mugged. After returning from the Malongo Café and posting my ... [Continue reading this entry]

Written at 6:20 PM, 9-11-06 I managed to rouse myself at exactly 8:40 the morning following the beach excursion, which happened to be a mere five minutes before the hostel’s breakfast ended. I’d been warned by the hostel’s inhabitants that the ... [Continue reading this entry]

Wild Nights on the Mediterranean

9:28 AM, 9-10-06 Barcelona—wow. What a city. This place could challenge Dublin’s Temple Bar for night life (& partying). At least, I suspect it could. It’s really impossible for me to say since I didn’t actually leave the hostel during my ... [Continue reading this entry]

A Trying Couple Days

Thursday, September 7th, 2006
3:37 PM, 9-7-06 To say it’s been an interesting couple days would be a misstatement—“a trying couple days” is probably more appropriate. I’ve got a lot of time to cover, so expect this blog to be a long one. Simply put, ... [Continue reading this entry]

Language Barriers

10:17 PM, 9-5-06 We finished the battle tour and Ashley and I returned to the bed and breakfast in Bayeux. We decided to go out to a nice restaurant for a genuine French dinner. We browsed around, checking virtually every menu ... [Continue reading this entry]

A Necessary Sacrifice

Monday, September 4th, 2006
5:14 PM, 9-4-06 It’s difficult to convey the magnitude and emotional tour de force of the experience I had on this day. I suppose I’ll go through each step of the day and then try to sum up the significance and ... [Continue reading this entry]
