August Long Weekend

Long weekends are great. We need more of them. I think we should have one for every month. I don’t appreciate that June has no holiday! And although February is a shorter month we should have a national holiday there too! Why not? We work too hard in this country and don’t have enough rest.

On Saturday, I went to the Heritage Days Festival with Charlene, Brent, Winnie and Dave. We all ate ourselves full, walked for ages and were very tired from the heat. Good thing we brought a camping chair for Winnie! The entertainment stages had some difficulty as the wind seemed to interfere with the backdrops. It’s really neat to watch the different traditional and non-traditional dances/performances from all around the world.

The most interesting of these was the Turkish Oil Wrestling. These guys came all the way from Turkey to perform topless for us in their studded leather pants. They pour oil over themselves and each other and then try to wrestle. The most alarming part was that the hands/arms went down the competitors pants as that was the only place to grip. I think itgave Charlene nightmares!

We tried food from at least half a dozen tents. There were tasty slushy fruit drinks, Brent had a young coconut drink, grilled meat on a stick, gooey cheesy bites and something resembling a beaver tail. They had a Canadian tent this year that offered what else? Poutine! Nanimo Bars and Butter tarts.

We drank and sat under some shade while watching some people balancing on a “tightrope” across some trees. I don’t know if they are training outdoors or what but it was a nice distraction while we were recovering from the intensity of the sun. We decided to leave at about 4.30pm as we were all pretty worn out after 3.5 hrs at the festival. Dark clouds were rolling towards the park anyways. The best part of leaving at that time was that the buses were not full and we made it back to our houses before the windy rainstorm blew in.

Sunday, I went out to Charlene’s lake lot. Practically the whole family was there. I taught Charlene’s niece, Lela, to “Hi-5”. I think I startled her a couple of times by my cheering her success but I think she gets it. Her family is great! So kind! We tried some waterskiing and tubing but I think the old motorboat needs some repair. Hopefully, it will be fixed enough that Charlene can go out again for Labour Day weekend.

On Monday night my family went over to Justin and Theresa’s for dinner. They were breaking in their fabulously shiny new bbq. And they’ve got landscaping! yay!
