I had a blast at the New Kids concert last night. The gals and I got there early, found our seats and anxiously awaited the start of the concert. The older Kids didn’t dissappoint! Plenty of screaming 30-something year old women in the crowd rekindling their love affair with the Beantown boys (and a couple of guys too!). Jordan’s falsetto surprisingly sounded exactly like my old tape! Their choreographed dance moves included a few classic moves (“Right Stuff” foot swing from side to side; “Hangin’ Tough” arm wave) from their music videos.
Don’t get me wrong, it also had it’s cheese factor. Crotch grabs on some of their songs (the newer ones I think). Jordan had a couple of solos with his white shirt flowing open in the wind, showing off his flat stomach and big pecs (hot but cheesy, I think Terri wet herself when she saw that body). Joey singing “Please Don’t Go Girl”, dropping to his knees pleading with the front row women and especially Donnie with his “yo, yo, Ed-mon-ton, you’re the best crowd ever!” comments to the audience. Sometimes cheese is good, sometimes it’s not…
The opening acts were very diverse. Lady GaGa opened with a 15 minute set where she gyrated onstage in her skimpy underpants and giant sceptre. The lighting was really good for her set but the choreography left a lot to be desired. I actually felt old watching her. I understand that this music matches more of the Kid’s current album and was targeted for the teenyboppers in the audience but it alienated me rather than excited me about what was coming up. Terri actually liked the Let’s Dance number LESS after watching LG perform it live. Let’s say it was about 14.5 minutes too much of her.
Brit popstar Natasha Bedingfield was excellent by comparison. Her more mature style reminded me more of Kylie Minogue (I know you might think Kylie is also trashy but not in comparison to LG). Long pencil skirt, white blouse and definately not trashy, fitting in with NKOTB’s older style of music. She even attempted a bit of french assuming that all Canadians knew french as a second language. I appreciated the attempt at any rate.
Worth the $80.00+ dollars I paid? I’d say yes.
