An Appeal for Help (by Laura)

June 5th, 2010

Hi, everybody!

Hamsa (aka Gulliver Hamsa Nye) and I are still in Finisterre! I would have liked to have returned to the Camino by now, but Hamsa is feeling kinda sickly. Nothing major, just the creeping crud. But its hard to slog a pack around the countryside when you feel like crap, no matter how much of your stuff your mom is carrying for you. Not that I´m complaining…  much.

Our friend Cristobal left today with the dogs to head up toward Muxia. There are some fine beaches along the way, so he plans to sleep on one of them tonight. I wish him all the best!

So, I need some help from any and all of you who live in the USA: please contact Michael and/or Sarah Beth for us! They aren´t answering any of our emails! ACK! We need Mike to bring a few things for us with him when he flies over here. I´ve sent him a detailed list via email, and Sarah Beth too, several times, but… no reply at all. There´s no reply at all. For heaven´s sake, dont make me break into my best Phil Collins impersonation. Or my worst.  Actually, they´re indistinguishable. So, yeah. Help.

I don´t know that I should post their digits on a website, so if you have their phone numbers, for the love of all that´s right in the world (and the poor Spaniards around me who really don´t want to hear me singing Genesis´ lyrics) please call them and harass them until they read my emails and email me back!

I´m heading back to our alburgue now. It´s so awesome there. I love the Swiss lady, Maria Louisa, who owns the place. She is delightful. I have some yummy local cheese and bread waiting for me there. I gotta tell ya, prices in Galicia are the bomb! I have been pigging out for pennies, and I can even afford to feed my bottomless pit of a teenager. He especially appreciates the Toblerone bars for 50 cents each. I like the giant ring of whole grain bread for €1.  And I like how when you ask for o.j. you always get fresh-squeezed! But I don´t like how every time, every freaking time, I order a salad it comes with tuna on top!  I say “sin atoon” but it doesn´t matter. If you´re in Spain, you´re getting tuna on your dang salad whether you like it or not!

So now I just order hot chocolate instead.  In a cup, not on a salad.

Call Mike now. Or I will send you a beautiful, fresh green salad covered in yucky tuna. You´ve been warned.

Love you!

1 hour of pain = 5 minutes of happiness (by Hamsa)

June 3rd, 2010

so we are walking on the camino and its like 4 days ago i just waited ´til now to tell the story ´cause i was tired… we were walking on the camino and were near the top of a mountain and i wanted to climb up it and take some pictures of ludwig for a ludwig quiz… anyway, as i am walking up there are these 1 foot bushes that are like a pine tree bush and they poke me like crazy and not only that they have some sort of poison on them that itches like crap. i get to the top after 30 minutes of climbing through these trees of HELL and its one of the most beautiful things i have ever seen! there is a picture down below. i saw some wild horses there as well. i did a huge circle of climbing up to avoid the tiny forest but on my way down i decide to go through the forest because its quicker. worse decision of my life… these 1 foot prickly bushes are now 2 feet tall and when i get to the forest after 29 mintues of 2 foot hell bushes i get to 5-10 feet tall ones and now my legs are itching all over and i am having an allergic reaction to the needles that cut right through my pants. i finally make it back to my mom and i take a benadryl and she wipes my legs with anti-itch wipes because i have 300 cuts on my legs (not exaggerating, really 300!) and they are all swelling. and now this computer won´t let me put the pic on so – ugh and $%!·$&%!”&%!·$%!·$%!·&%!·$%%/%/&%$·!”$$….. i´ll put it on as soon as i can

it was going to be a ludwig quiz but now its something to admire when i put it up

Hello from the end of the world!

June 1st, 2010

Hi, everybody!

We are currently in Finisterre, aka Fisterra, aka the end of the world. It´s a beautiful small city with all kinds of history. You know, the kind of history that makes America seem, like, maybe 5 years old.

We´ve been really enjoying the Camino thus far. I will come back another time to walk the entire route. But for now, our mini-Camino has been perfect. We left Santiago on the 26th of May, and here we are in Finisterre on the 1st of June.  We´ll take two or three days to get to Muxia (moo-she-ah) which will be the end for us. In fact, both Finisterre and Muxia are considered ending points, and the towns have a rivalry going over which is the real Camino end. So, we´ll just go to both!

Finisterre has been a pilgrimage site for millenia, and there are still places intact here where people went to honor various elements of nature, mostly the sol. Some ancient rituals have recently been revived, including the burning of something personal at the end of one´s pilgrimage. Last night I hiked to the far end of Cabo Fisterra with some fellow pilgrims (peregrinos) to watch the sun go down from the westernmost point in this region (the end of the world, remember?) and I helped a few with their fires. Some burned their hat, gloves, written sentiments, but mostly they burned their smelly socks. Which I wholeheartedly supported. After a month or two, socks can really start to reek (some of them were stiff!)   Yikes.

Anyway, after the burning of the putrid socks, we watched the sun go down over the horizon. Or did we? We don´t really know because a big, fat cloud bank rolled in and completely obscured our view of the sun and the horizon. So, we just watched the clouds get darker. And talked and laughed. And drank wine. And ate granola bars. Some of these folks had stepped out their front doors (literally) two or three months ago and had been walking ever since to get to this place. I was deeply moved, and humbled, by every single person there, and the beautiful, pure emotion they were sharing.

I had been worried that we would be judged for being short-term pilgrims, you know, like weenie peregrinos. But everyone was totally open and accepting and welcoming. Every single person we´ve met on the Camino has been absolutely beautiful.

Three days ago, Hamsa and I met two fellas along the way, and one of them had his pack with him. A pack of dogs, that is. Brut, Jacko, Pusa, and Roch. They´ve been walking for 9 weeks now, all the way from Barcelona.  We instantly fell in love with all of them, dog and human. So, we´ve been walking with them ever since! Oh, yeah – the humans have names, to: Isacio and Cristabol. We love them both. They are so kind and helpful, and I am really grateful to have traveled with them for a little bit.

When we walk, we talk, and it´s funny because I speak English and no Español but a wee bit of Français, Isacio speaks Español and no English but a little Français, Cristabol speaks Español and no Français but a little English! So, we speak this funky amalgam of the three languages, with lots of gesturing thrown in, and repeating things, trying again, ¨no comprende¨ try again, gesture some more, oh, oh, ¨si comprende¨ and success! It takes an hour to have a five minute conversation, but its okay, because we enjoy every mispronounced word of it!

When a pilgrim reaches Finisterre, they are given a Compostela – a gorgeous certificate to commemorate their journey. And because the dogs had made the journey, too, they were given their own Compostela! I´ll post a picture when I have more time. The ¨ciber-cafe¨is about to close, so I have to go soon.

Hamsa and I will stay here for a couple of days until our blisters look a little less like something from a B-grade zombie flick. Until then, we´ll limp around town, visiting sacred sites and watching seagulls.

We love you all!

Hello Again (by Laura)

May 25th, 2010

Hi, everyone!

This post has to be short b/c I´m borrowing a computer for a few minutes. The cursor likes to randomly jump about, so forgive any typos

Gulliver Hamsa Nye and I will be heading off on the Camino Finisterre tomorrow, and may not have much internet access for the next couple of weeks. We are in Santiago de Compostela right now, and we love it here. Galicia is our favorite part of Spain so far. You can really see the Celtic influence here. The food& the music are great, and the people very friendly. There is a cheese here, a special cheese: ¨tetilla¨, which translates to ¨nipple¨ and it looks just like a big nipple! It is so creamy and yummy, and its all we need in life now.

I have to run now, Robert will be needing his computer back soon. Please know we love you!

Adios, Laura and Hamsa
