James & Quene travelling around the World

Bienvenidos a Cusco, la capital de lo que fue el imperio inca y literalmente traducido del Quechua, el ombligo del mundo. Volamos desde Lima para llegar al Inti Raymi o fiesta del Sol (o solsticio de invierno). Los incas realizaban rituales incluido el sacrificio de una llama para que el sol no se alejara. Nada mas llegar la ciudad estaba rebosante de color y alegria. Espero que disfruteis del Inti Raymi con nosotros.

ENG: Welcome to Cusco, capital of the once mighty Inca Empire. We flew from Lima, about 55 mins by plane. When we arrived in Cusco, home to about 300,000 Cusque̱os, the majority of whom were bang in the middle of celebrations of Inti Raymi (Sun God), a weekend festival that marks the Winter Solstice where they make a sacrifice to the Sun God РInti Raymi. The place was buzzing with locals dressed in traditional outfits, dancing and drinking parading through the streets all day and night, and of course, everyone having a great time! Tomamos tantas fotos que fue muy dificil elegir unas pocas para este post ,asi que al ser una fiesta tan especial nos hemos dejado llevar por tanto colorido. Absolutamente toda la gente estaba vestida con atuendo tradicional todos bailando y posando para las camaras. Menos mal que cambiamos el vuelo para no perdernos esta fiesta…!!!

ENG: We took so many photos it was a difficult task reducing the number of pictures for the post, hope you won’t be dissapointed, or bored!!!!!

Both kids as well as adults took part in the parades, and there were smiles on everyone’s faces, these guys really know how to put on a party!

Para no parecer “gringos” (como nos llaman a los extranjeros) y poder mezclarnos con la gente, nos compramos un poncho y un gorro peruano. Fue muy divertido ,nos juntamos con otra pareja que conocimos en Lima, Juan Carlos de Guatemala y Christiam de Nicaragua , en la foto con la gente que nos vendio los ponchos… Nos reimos un mucho esa noche. James fumandose un puro guatemalteco y la Catedral de Cuzco y vista de la plaza de armas por la noche.

ENG: We decided to take part too, so as not to look like total gringos we dressed up in traditional gear, along with the couple we met in Lima, Juan Carlos and Christiam, and the shop owners of the shop where we bought our gear! James puffing on a Guatemalan cigar, a gift from Juan Carlos and Christiam! And the main square Plaza de las Armas lit up at night, to the left is the Cathedral, and there are 3 other churches on this square!

Y asi es como parece la Plaza de Armas durante el dia. La bandera de Cuzco es la del arcoiris, la gente estuvo desfilando durante horas, horas y horas.. sera el mate de coca o tienen pilas especiales?? Nosotros andabamos dos pasos y nos ahogabamos durante los primeros dias.

ENG: And the plaza during the day! The flag of the Incas, and Cusco region has been hijacked by the gay movement as you can see the similarity, but the Incas had this flag first.

La celebracion del Inti Raymi comenzo en el centro de la ciudad, fue espectacular y muy emotivo alrededor de la plaza de armas mas de 10.000 personas contemplando este ritual de dar gracias al Dios Sol. Mas de 100.000 personas estaban esperando arriba en el templo de Sacsahuayman y hasta alli fuimos a coger un buen lugar para verlo mejor.

ENG: The Inti Raymi celebrations began in town, here they are in Plaza de las Armas, giving thanks to and worshipping the sun god Inti Raymi, dressed in traditional Inca costumes.

El colorido de los trajes , la musica que cantaban la verdad que fue impresionante verlo.

ENG: When they praise Inti Raymi, they point in the direction of the sun, obviously! Just in case you were wondering why they were all pointing in the same direction!!!!!

Este es el templo de Sacsahuayman, cerca de la ciudad donde cada año se celebra la ceremonia del solsticio de Invierno o Inti Raymi. La ceremonia dura 4 horas y para coger un buen sitio necesitas estar 3 horas antes, nosotros llegamos un poco tarde llegamos a las 11 y empezaba a la 1, asi que estuvimos incomodos. Lo importante era estar alli.. no?

ENG:Later that day (24th of June) the day chosen to officially represent the Winter Solstice, another more impressive ceremony takes place just outside the town in the ruins of the Sacsahuayman temple. The ceremony lasts about 4 hours, and you really need to get there about 3 hours before hand to get a decent spot, we kinda left it a bit late, getting there about 11:00, it started about 13:30, so we ended up being a bit squashed.

Este es el Inca siendo transladado al centro donde comenzaria el ritual o ceremonia del Inti Raymi. La foto central es cuando una llama fue sacrificada y su corazon fue alzado en direccion al sol (no sabemos si la sacrificaron de verdad pero en la piedra donde lo hicieron habia sangre). Igual si hubiesemos pagado los 80$ que valia estar en las gradas hubieramos podido verlo mejor. (Bueno igual mejor no verlo..pufff)

ENG: Here’s the Inca Emperor being carried into the arena. Next the scarifice of the llama, poor thing. Right, the Inca and his generals observe groups dancing in front of the stage. Oh, and in the foreground you can see the comfortable seats for which many a gringo forked out a whopping US$80 for the privelege.

Esta es una vista del escenario central donde hicieron todos los rituales, fijaros en los detalles de los trajes de los incas.

De camino al templo de Sacsahuayman nos paramos para una foto y para recuperar la respiracion, Cusco esta a 3300 msnm y este templo esta a 45min del centro cuesta arriba, llevabamos solo un dia en la ciudad y ahi es cuando notas si estas acostumbrado a la altitud o no. Una vista de Cusco desde las montañas.

ENG: On the way up to Sacsayhuaman we stopped for a photo (and a breather, Cusco is 3300m above sea level, and Sacsayhuaman is a good 45 minutes trek UPHILL, not easy when you’re not used to the altitude). A view of Cusco from above.

Los Incas eran maestros en muchas cosas, pero unas de las mas destacadas era en construir edificios, estas piedras pesaban tonelada, cortadas a la perfeccion, como la famosa piedra de los doce angulos (tercera foto), no cortaban estas piedras asi porque si… su finalidad era que fuera resistente a seismos, tan tipicos de esta region. Como cortaron las piedras asi fue un misterio. Cuando llegaron los conquistadores pensaban que solo el demonio era capaz de construir algo asi.

ENG: The Incas are renowned for their amazing stonework, there is still research ongoing into how they managed to cut out and move huge rocks, many weighing several tonnes. Many of their more important buildings were built in such a way as to withstand earthquakes, as this area high in the Andes is prone to the odd seismic shock. Oh, they didn’t use any type of cementor fixative when building. Right, the famous 12 sided stone in the centre of Cusco.

Esta foto tan bonita de unos cusqueños contemplando el paisaje tan espectacular de esta parte de Peru. La verdad que fue facil hacer fotos buenas, donde quiera que miraras habia una buena oportunidad.
