Space pictures of Nepal and the Himalaya

Here I made a very short selection. The pics have been adapted by Andrees de Ruiter:
www.nepal-dia.de

During different space missions, the astronauts of NASA took many pictures. Kindly the Johnson Space center has loaded more than 40000 on their server where you can see them for free. Unfortunately, previous link to the NASA Johnson Space Center Earth Sciences and Image Analysis Laboratory is outdated so you will have to find it by yourselves.

Here is another great website quoted by Andrees where you can find your favourite mountain:

Annapurna and Daulagiri range:

Annappurna range:

The mountains surrounding the Annapurna Sanctuary form a horseshoe shaped valley. The longest river is the Kali Gandhaki khola as seen in the pic below. It is alongside this river where we did our trekking, that is, at the lowest altitudes. It has one of the deepest gorges in Dana, we tried to get there but had to miss them due to lack of time.

A similar valley in the east side of the Annapurna range is formed by the Annapurna north face, Tilicho and Nilgiri peaks . It is drained by the Miristi khola (river). It is from this valley that in 1950 the French expedition led by Maurice Herzog climbed the Annapurna I from the north side, accompanied by Lachenal. They both ended up with frozen fingers and toes. It was the first 8000 climbed.

The valley of Kali Gandaki:

Mount Everest:

Here you can see M.Everest (a tiny cloud on top and behind the crown): its faces are so steep that snow slips off so it is less "white" than its neighbouring mountains. The snowcapped peaks in front are Nuptse (left) and Lohtse (right). From the plane, we could only see the tip of M.Everest as it was hidden by the aforementioned peaks. The range is in the Solu Khumbu region where my friend Sherpa lives with his family. I must tell him to look up to the Space Station and waive his red hat...and my sunglasses!

Hope you enjoy this.

Dear, I am so envy of your trip. I wish I could be there with the mountains and people. When are you gonna come back? Show me more pics when you get back.
