February 16, 2005Dia Dos - Zarcero a La Fortuna
This morning I awoke to the sounds of children walking to school, some with their parents in tow. I took a stroll around Zarcero to see the fincas (farms), the mercados (markets), and the views. I bought some bananas at one of the mercados - not fresh, but dried in a wood-fired oven. Muy delicioso! The adults were quite pleasant, though I was not very effective in responding to them. I am working on being more patient in my interactions in Spanish - it will be work. After my walk, I checked out and went to the town bus stop. The bus was packed full (to the doors), and as I began to board Luis from the pizza place grabbed me. He paid for my fare and had the driver put my bag in the compartment. I was quite impressed by his generosity. Though he does not speak English, he helped me substantially and worked on my Spanish with me. He got off the bus in San Carlos and I gave him my Michael Franti mix that I brought for the trip. It was mostly for his help and partially to introduce him to some quality music from the U.S. On the way to La Fortuna (where I am presently), I met three Europeans. One is from Holland, one form Germany, and one from Switzerland. We grabbed a hostel together and had some lunch in La Fortuna. It is quite rainy here, and we are waiting for the weather to clear for a visit to Volcan Arenal, which is currently active. There are also hot springs and waterfalls in the area. My plan is to be here for a couple of days before taking a Jeep through the hills to San Luis, where I will attend the timber framing workshop. Hasta luego... and muchas gracias for your comments!
