February 12, 2005A Request to My Friends
I am making my final preparations for departure. My cameras are packed, my clothes are in the washing machine, and I am copying all of my critical information as a backup. As excited as I am about this trip, I am also a wee bit anxious when I consider how difficult it will be for me communicate with people. For at least six of the eight weeks that I will be in Costa Rica, I will be living in Spanish-only speaking households. This will provide a steep learning curve and quite probably some frustration. With that potential in mind, I have a request for all of you out there. If you can find the time to jot down a quick story of some time that we spent together and either post it as a comment on this site or e-mail it to me at vwoodruff@nonviolenteducator.org, I would greatly appreciate it. I don't care whether they are serious, funny, or embarassing. It would be very uplifting to have some instant smiles, laughs, inspiration, tears, or whatever while I am away from all of you. Muchas gracias... hasta luego! Vaughan Comments
Vaughan, Vaughan, most of my family was born and raised in the Brunka community you're going to visit. I know I told you I was from Iowa, but that's just what I tell people. It's easier that way. Hey, do me a favor. There's a dude named Carlos who lives in the hut next to the Starbucks; not the main Starbucks, and not the one across the street from the main one. I'm talking about the one next to the old Starbucks by the lake. Anyway, the dude owes me five dollars. See if you can get it from him for me. I don't know when I'll get back there. Thanks man. Posted by: Dan Snipes on February 13, 2005 10:22 AMHi! You don't know me, but I am leaving for Costa Rica in 3 days and I relate to your fears about the communication difficulties. How is all of that going? It is definately a little scary to put yourself out there and try new things, huh? Donde esta el bano? Posted by: Mike on February 21, 2005 11:46 AM |
