July 06, 2004Melbourne to Alice Springs via The Great Ocean Road and Mt. Barker
Soooooo... we got lucky enough to get an awesome relocation of a brand spanking new Toyota 4x4 campervan! I know dad'll need more specs so here's the cut out. I was too busy to remember to take our own pics so those people in the first pic aren't us, though they could be in 30 years or so! We picked up our van and hit the road, The Great Ocean Road that is! Its alot likedriving in New Zealand except that they have guard rails for safety here in OZ. We wouldn't want to be driving off any of those cliffs! Here's a few more G.O.R shots if you're interested. Shots of a road aren't so exciting. I just love driving! We made it to Adleaide early the second day and took a quick visit to Mt. Barker, Still, we had a long way to go! Back in the car and the kilometers started ticking off. We decided to drive through Adelaide and head right out to Uluru, formerly known as Ayer's Rock! This place has become a real tourist trap despite being a sacred site to the aboriginies. And it's created some conflict because the aboriginies don't want you to climb it. Only initiated Arrente men climb it and only on special occasions. We were torn. We did come a long way after all. Yet, it didn't feel right. We chose NOT to climb Uluru. We did walk around it's 10km base and got some great pics. Here are.....some of.....the many......powerful......and beautiful......faces of...Uluru! The skies out here were the bluest I've ever seen. I was at times quite speechless. Here I am around the base. We got a few really great pics of this great warrior monolith. Here's one during the day and one with an amazing sunset. We hit the road again and finally ended up at Alice Springs after a total of 3800km on the road. I was glad to get on the train to Darwin. More later... Comments
Hi. Another awesome entry! Thanks again for taking the time to share your trip with us. The pics are fantastic. Maybe this is the start of Josh and Amanda's "Smoothe Guides" for formerly plushy travelers! Love you, dad Posted by: Steven Saul on July 8, 2004 10:00 PM |
