Recommended Panajachel Hotel

As you can see, I dont post many hotel and restaurants on this blog. I really prefer that folks find their own niche, something that fits what they need to experience on their own journey. BUT, a few places are so special and essential to the amazing vibe I left Guate with that I have to share them. This post is about such a place.

Posada Monte Rosa (above pic, back left side)

Maybe it was the family that ran the place that made me feel at home. Maybe it was the huge room, comfy beds (most comfy during my travels in Guate) or the amazing abundance of hot water AND lack of bugs in the shower. Hmm. Will I ever know? Nah, it doesnt matter.

What does matter is that Artemio Buch, the man in charge, is super sweet, fair, helpful and (of course) warm and friendly. His family including his equally sweet (but slightly more reserved) wife, small boys that he homeschools live in a small house next to the hotel. The hotel is off the main drag by about 1 city block, but it takes about 1 minute (2 if there are as many puddles as I had to jump over in the rainy season) to be on Santandler (the new main road). He can help with ferry tours around the lake, shuttle buses leaving Pana and probably anything else you need.

He does not speak much English, but is willing to speak slow Spanish and use hand gestures and such to get info across. And smile in the process.

What more can I say except its a wam, friendly and safe place. Oh yeah, the hotel is behind a giant front door/gate area. They close the gate about 8pm, but he said (and I did this one night by accident, am blaming it on the vino tinto) its cool to ring to enter til 1 or 2 am. So I guess you could say there is kinda a curfew, but to be honest, you’d be kinda hard pressed to find much to keep ya out later than that in Pana anyway.

100 Quetzals per night. (about $13 USD). I didnt try and negotiate longer stay discounts cause I thought I was staying a few days (HA!)
