Back to Antigua-Volcan Pacaya

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

We didn´t make it to the other towns on the lake on tues. because dave wasn´t feeling better yet, so we just hung around pana some more. Yesterday I was out of bed by 6:27am which hurt, but we got to visit the towns of Santa Cruz and San Pedro la laguna. santa cruz was really interesting. it´s an indigenous town w- alleyways everywhere on a hill side. i really cant explain it, but you´ll see the pics when i post them. san pedro is a super gringo town though. on the boat from santa cruz to san pedro there was an older indigenous woman on there w- her goods in a bright cloth and it had chickens in it!!! dave thought that was funny ´cause one was trying to escape.

we headed back to antigua on the 12pm shuttle so that we could arrange to climb pacaya (a volcano) the next day. not bad, 3 things off of my ¨to do¨ list in 6 days-see monkeys, zipline, climb volcano. it was a strenuous climb since i didn´t do the turbo jam dvds as much as i wanted to before i left. we got sooooo close to the molten rock. we could feel the heat coming through the rocks below us. it was pretty cool!!! you´ll see those pics too soon enough. we had to get up at 5:30 today!!! that´s so early, especially because i´m not a morning person.

tomorrow i´ll get to sleep in until 7:45 because we´re going to the city to the railroad yard so that dave can see some of the old steam engines. we hooked up with a guy who works there before we left because the company that runs the railroad down here is based out of pittsburgh. strange coincidence, huh?!

well, that´s it for now. i´m kinda tired from the long hike today…

Antigua to Panajachel, Guatemala

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Hi, all, well we made it. it was a long trip and the plane got really bumpy coming into guatemala city between the volcanoes. we made our way to antigua and to our surprise found out that all of the rooms were sold out because there was going to be a procession the next day, 2 weeks before easter! we didn´t freak out though and stopped in to a travel agency who had a connection to a lady who runs a guesthouse, i think mostly for language school students, and we stayed there the first night, $40 US, out of the budget, but a room. it was in front of a park, san sebastian. the first place that we stopped at said they had rooms for the next night so we switched to there in the morning, 170 Quetzales which is like $22 US, much better.

btw, the keyboard is different here so i don´t know how to use all of the symbols/punctuation that i want/need to.

anyway, the next day [read on]
