August 25, 2004artistic food in Leeds
I thought that I would go into Leeds this lunch time to pick up some potatoes for supper and maybe try and buy a pair of work shoes (shock, horror!!), and found that Leeds, the most boring city in the world, can be mildly surprising! Subway was advertising for staff in its window. Not just your average monkey job, but a post as a sandwich artist! Now maybe I am a bit pernickety with words, but to me, an artist is a creative profession with a certain amount of responsibility to visually illustrate ideas. Somehow, I can’t imagine that Subway gives its “artists” the freedom to illustrate ideas by the creative use of sandwich fillings! I have this wonderful image of the artist sitting in a loft studio in front of an architects drawing board, surrounded by trestles covered in different breads, meats and salads. On the drawing board is a page of sketched sandwiches with different fillings, each with studies of the different constituents beside it! Then, crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing, I was startled to be shouted at, seemingly by the lamp post. Looking up I discovered that there was a loud speaker mounted by the lights, and after listening hard for a few moments, realised that it was warning me that there was “two way traffic”! Very strange – an incomprehensible warning of the bleeding obvious! To whom this is aimed is quite beyond me! Posted by Tassy on August 25, 2004 03:09 PM

Hi Tassy, Just checked out your blog for the first time. Love it! Originally from the UK (Manchester), it's been yonks since I have been back to the 'ol country so to speak. Actually a damn lifetime it seems. This is why I love reading about all the places!. Anyway I am raving on here. I had to laugh at the 'sandwich artist' at Subway. Hey, I have one better - Here in Perth (Oz) we have a ritzy suburb called Subiaco and I noticed the small sign in the window asking for a 'Creative Sandwich Consultant'. So, out of curiosity I entered and asked the manager. His reply - "We need someone to watch over our sandwich makers and to answer any questions they might have." |
