Charleston, SC…Night 1
After spending a miserably hot day in Savannah, as well as driving from Jacksonville to Charleston, I was extremely relieved when I finally arrived at my hostel in Charleston that was charging me less than $20 a night for a bed at the NotSo Hostel. I parked my car in the back parking lot, and unloaded my stuff and made my way to my bedroom where I laid my bag down on my bed. I got freshened up and made my way downstairs, hoping to figure out where I could find some food. I was told by a guy who looked as if he were close to me in age, and a Canadian that I could find some really good food on King Street, so I took his advice and made my way downtown on foot. I bumped into a guy outside the hostel, someone staying at the hostel and he suggested I didn’t take a certain street to get downtown at night. Actually, he told me that there was only one safe street I could take to get downtown, and that any other street would be putting my life in serious peril. Due to my lack of energy I opted to take the lit Cannon Street and eventually found myself on King after 10 minutes of walking.
King Street had more lights on it then any other street I had seen and looked as if it were the commercial mecca for Charleston. The section I was on when I first entered King must have been towards the end of the street because there wasn’t much of anything once I got on the road, but the closer I got towards the Charleston Harbor the more livelier the night scene. I was looking for a decent meal and found it at this restaurant that specialized in making chicken. I got spicy chicken fingers, or something with buffalo sauce and a coke and sat at the bar enjoying my midnight dinner after a long day of traveling. I was actually ahead of schedule and for the first time during my road trip actually felt at extreme ease because I was so close to home. I wasn’t really all that close to NY, but it was the closest I had been to New York in almost a month and everything seemed really easy in my mind. No matter what happened I’d be back in New York in 2 days max.
After finishing my meal I headed back towards my hostel for sleep, and the next day of touring Charleston. I really had no idea if this city was even worth stopping by, but I already had a good feeling about the place after only spending a few hours in the city that evening.
