Newcastle United vs Sunderland AFC. More Taiwan pics.

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

1330GMT tomorrow afternoon will see the World’s greatest sporting event taking place at St James Park, Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Conditions have to be perfect for this to transpire. This nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat phenomenom occurs only twice a year if both parties are in the same division. Fortunately, this is currently the case. Accordingly, we all have the opportunity to witness this spectacle in a mere 24hrs.

What are you talking about? I’m talking about the eagerly awaited North-East football derby: Newcastle Utd vs Sunderland AFC. Almost 53000 people will witness this encounter inside the stadium. Millions more throughout the region and across the globe live on TV. Millions that is except me! The powers that be in Taiwan would rather watch Yulan vs Taiwan Beer at basketball followed by a replay of the NY Yankees vs Baltimore Orioles at baseball. A f*cking replay? I have just checked the TV schedules online. Is this BIG time bollicks or what? It is difficult to find the words to describe my disappointment.

I have had it up to here (pointing to my head) with shitty American sports. Who wants to watch a load of 7ft black blokes bouncing a big ball around? Basketbullshit tsschh! Baseball? What’s that? We have baseball in England except we call it rounders and only girls play it. I am really missing footbaal man! My loss will feel particularly acute tomorrow as I try to find online commentary when I could be in ANY other SE Asian country watching this with a beer!

Enough moaning - Haway the Toon!

Meanwhile, we’ve had another day out:

sa501095.jpg

Aye, it’s a canny big bell like. I don’t know why she is doing a Jaws impression? She reminds me of a gameshow girl showing off prizes. This is Tucheng Temple not far from our house.

sa501109.jpg

Zi Ting doing her crab impression. Or is she trying to make an equalateral triangle but her hands have like magnetic charges?

sa501180.jpg

A little beach near Tainan city. Can you see how the water reached her knees about 10s before? Haha, pretty funny. She wasn’t expecting that! The two fingers are explaining how she has two wet legs - I think. Or maybe it is simply the standard Taiwan photo pose.

sa501185.jpg

Look Steve, a horse! Champion! I can’t get the Black Beauty theme tune out of my head - and Alan Partridge tidying up his room to it! Apparantly there is a typhoon somewhere off Taiwan hence the clouds. Can you see all the bamboo washed up in the background?

16-041.jpg

Zi Ting at YanMingShan flower park near Taipei (at about 1255 I reckon).

16-075.jpg

A nice close up of some beautiful orchids.

16-085.jpg

现在在这里有很多花 = A lot of flowers here at this time of year. In ‘easier’ simplified Chinese characters.

16-159.jpg

Thanks to Newton, any knowledgeable engineer should be able to calculate all the forces at work here.

16-185.jpg

What are you doing sweetheart? I keep telling you to stop kissing rocks.

16-202.jpg

Zi Ting and her mate Louise posing in front of the mushroom shaped rocks near Taipei.

sa501078.jpg

Ready to go. Outside the house in Cigu. These sunglasses give me fly-vision.

sa501088.jpg

Which comes in handy when watching this puppet show. Very psychedelic. I was thinking, instead of drinking that magic mushroom milkshake in Laos, I should have saved it for here! The accompanying music sounded like someone trying to wash a cat while dropping bricks on a tin roof.

sa501090.jpg

I was jealous of Zi Ting’s bell pic so I wanted one too.

sa501091.jpg

This was a wooden lion or dog next to the bell. Like everything here, the detail is incredible on this sculpture. The bell appears to be a focal point for reasons that remain a mystery to me. Like many other things here.

sa501112.jpg

I fancy some of this wallpaper for my next house.

sa501119.jpg

A bridge over troubled waters? This moat surrounds the temple.

sa501124.jpg

Praying for a trophy next season.

sa501132.jpg

You can see a couple of golden Bhuddas through the smoke of the joss sticks.

sa501136.jpg

This is as close as I’ve ever been to a deity. It’s a pretty surreal place. The atmosphere, the smell of joss sticks, the hushed calm and the contemplative ambience leave you a little spellbound.

sa501150.jpg

Trying to get an impression of scale while Zi Ting was in the toilet.

sa501164.jpg

Creasing up with laughter at Zi Ting’s crack.

sa501167.jpg

The very front of the temple. The stone carving is exquisite. These things must take an awful lot of money and time to build.

sa501199.jpg

Wahey! A gorilla supping a pint of beer! What is it with Taiwan and gorillas?

sa501168.jpg

A Taiwanese institution. The betel nut beauties. These lasses sell betel nuts from neon-lit roadside glass cabinets. This lass here is very modestly dressed as many of her counterparts wear bikinis and boots with 6 inch soles. I have only seen this in Taiwan! Nowhere else in the World seems to do it. I love it but it must cause traffic accidents.

sa501202.jpg

A little later. One more to give you an idea. These things are everywhere man! So many sexy lasses too!

sa501205.jpg

It looks like a one-woman disco.

Five days until I hit the Philippines again! This time last year I had just arrived at Hoa’s Place on China beach next to Marble mountain in Vietnam.

Updated pics and unidentifiable food. English weather? No thanks.

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

I’ve added more pics and resized them for easier viewing. Don’t worry, the photos load very quickly now. Click on the following links to view:

Iceland, Russia, Mongolia and China.

Cambodia and Vietnam.

Laos, Thailand and Burma.

To see recent pics of Taiwan just look at recent posts.

A quick weather comparison taken from the BBC website. Just to show you that it doesn’t only rain in England:

morpeth-weather.jpg

Morpeth, England weather forecast. Kind of typical really. Mid-April and temperatures still struggling to reach double figures.

tainan-weather.jpg

Tainan, Taiwan weather forecast. How much rain? But when it’s not raining we do get some sun and just look at those temperatures! Always between 25-30 - Lovely!

sa501028.jpg

So what do you fancy then? This is mission impossible when you first arrive in Taiwan. You can’t read anything and the food looks like it’s from another planet.

sa501073.jpg

Again, what’s all this? I think I’ll go for the wood shavings on the left. Some of this is dried spicy/sweet squid which is, despite what you might first think, a delicious chewy fishy treat. I eat a lot of fresh BBQd spicy squid at the nightmarkets out here - lush!

sa500984.jpg

Zi Ting at a fishing port in Bali near Taipei.

 sa501038.jpg

Also near Taipei the sea has carved these rocks into mushrooms. There are many curiously shaped rocks here.

sa501068.JPG

Like this one. Known locally as the Queen. She is well fit. Or is it a queen in the gay-bloke sense?

This time last year I was being overcharged in Vietnam on the over-crowded transit van from Kontum to Quang Ngai.

Zaijian.

This post is not really travel related. More an observational skit. I found this info while searching online for stuff about Pegswood, my home village. It made me laugh - a lot!

Illegal employment pics and Kaohsiung map hero

Saturday, April 12th, 2008
If you are feeling vindictive you can forward these pics to the Taiwanese authorities and land me in a World of anal probing hurt. Alternatively, you could just look at them and go "oooh aaaah". Here goes: sa500945.jpg The ... [Continue reading this entry]

An eccentric transient?

Thursday, April 10th, 2008
I received an airmail from my dear Mother yesterday. It took 2.5 weeks to navigate its way from the small Northumberland village of Pegswood, deep in Northern England to the small Taiwanese village of Cigu. I suspect it got delayed ... [Continue reading this entry]

666 days, buying a wife, whistling, heat, tribal dancing and Kaohsiung

Monday, April 7th, 2008
Standby for a statistical assault.  六百六十六天 This means '666 days' or, more aptly 'The number of the beast'. I have been going for 666 days! 22 months. 2 months short of 2 years. I love not known where life will take me ... [Continue reading this entry]

Rebalancing karma, killing mosquitos and the sliding pound

Friday, April 4th, 2008
I do not subscribe to any religions but I have been dwelling on karma quite a lot recently. I like the idea of karma, even though I admit to not knowing exactly what it is. I think of it as a spiritual means of fairly distributing justice. A process beyond the ... [Continue reading this entry]

663 days, flying, teaching, reminiscing and studying.

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008
Not much going on at the moment. I have purchased a return flight from Taipei to Manila with www.cebupacificair.com for 106gbp. Last time it was only 62gbp - bugger! I leave on 24th April in order to comply with ... [Continue reading this entry]
