I'm about to do a three month overland tour of eastern and southern Africa, and I keep coming back to your blog. The post-mortem on what was / was not useful on your packing list is a great resource. Thanks!

Hi Danielle! Yes, it was tremendously useful, if nothing else but for staving off my mother's mental breakdown by talking her off the ledge every few days. I did indeed use it in every country. The only thing you have to do is buy a new sim card in every country. So if you don't use up all your prepaid minutes in Egypt, that won't help you in Morocco, as you have to buy a new card. Your phone number will also change in each country as a result. I suppose it depends on where you go, but certainly most people had one in Africa (I didn't see almost any landlines at all) and it was great for calling ahead to make reservations a few days in advance of where I was going. Or, if staying in one place for a while, you ca plug in numbers for taxi cabs, restaurants, new friends, etc. Enjoy your trip!!!

Wow! what an informative post. Not too many folks talk about what they brought after the trip, so this is much appreciated. My husband and I will begin our year-long trip in July.

Just one question: you said you bought a cell phone in Africa. Was it useful? Did it work in every country you visited? I don't have one now, but am wondering if it would be good to have on our trip. Any input would be helpful.

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me with this necessary but dreaded task of packing. I will be leaving Feb 1 2008 with my daughter for a rtw and this helped. I will read whatever you have to offer. with sincere thanks

Hey, Thanks for all the advice. I think I am pretty strict with myself when it comes to packing, my Europe trip was the worst though, I think my backpack weighed 30lbs!! I ended up leaving clothes in various pensions and guesthouse around Europe. Right now my husband and I are in Thailand and so far we seem to be wearing everything we brought, which is a good sign I think. Again thanks for the advice! Cheers. http://hobosinlovemedia.com
