India

India was an experience!! People stared at us a lot because there are not a lot of Westerners out there. People would ask me to be in their photos and show me their babies a lot too!! I was a celebrity!! The food was nice because it was mostly vegetarian so meant there was a lot for me to eat. India, especially Delhi, was very dirty though and the pollution from the cars in Delhi was unbearable if you got caught driving in a rigshaw/tuk tuk in traffic. We travelled around a bit - to Jaipur where we rode on elephants up to a fort, to Agra where we visited the magnificient Taj Mahal, then to Varanasi where we saw the Ganges. The Ganges is a big river where people wash themselves, their clothes and their sacred cows!! Therefore, as it was very dirty, we decided not to take a trip on a boat over it! We did see the main burning ghat though, this is where they cremate the bodies of the dead. It was very surreal, obviously in England death is looked on as a private and very sad time whereas here it was very public and the family aren't allowed to cry (the women aren't allowed to come to the cremation either). Very interesting but we got pestered here,as we did a lot, for money. We had to get a train from Agra to Varanasi and after Varanasi to Delhi. This was awful!! On our outbound journey we had a rat in the waiting room who kept coming up out the toilets! We had to spend about ten hours with him!! The sleeper carriage was very basic but we did meet a nice Japanese girl. On the return journey, a man snored all the way back and his friend sneezed curry over us!! A girl kept bringing a baby to see me, a baby with a big scab on its head!! (i.e wasnt that cute!) I tried to get some heels reheeled in India, basically don't bother unless u don't mind them deforming your shoes!!! Obviously I still paid him though because one English pound to them can feed their family for a day maybe more. In Delhi we saw the Lotus Temple, went to Jama Masjid where we saw Imran Khan and went to Gandhi's memorial site. Everything is so cheap in India, it is unbelievable - for e.g. sandwiches work out about 25p. We had an interesting time but we were relieved to leave, although I wouldn't mind going back one day to visit Bombay and Calcutta.
