February 27, 2005Thailand,Cambodia, Malaysia and Singapore
Well I will try and keep this short!! I loved Thailand, it is so beautiful and there is so much to do for an unbelievably cheap price!! I ate my first thai green curry in Bangkok, it was so hot it literally burnt the back of my throat but it was very nice. We went to Wat Po and The Grand Palace, both magnificent. We also visited the famous Khao San road, the backpackers area, which had great pubs and some good market stalls. We actually saw someone selling cooked locusts and scorpions!!! We visited the floating markets too and went on one of the boats. We went to Pattaya which is not a very nice place, luckily we got a boat across to Coral Island which was very beautiful. Unfortunately I was followed by an Iraqi man who wouldn't leave me alone so I had to seek refuge with an older Australian couple!! We went to Ko Samet, an island on the East side. It is actually my favourite island in Thailand, it was very beautiful with beautiful sands and sea. We stayed in a beach hut that cost under 3 pounds to stay in!! We had a wonderful time there. We had one great night on the beach where we stayed out till 6am drinking with loads of travellers, this was amazing. We also had a thai massage here. We visited Ko Chang too which was also beautiful and very green. Here we went on an elephant trek. My elephant was young so a bit naughty! We fed the elephants bananas too. We "popped" over to Cambodia for a few days. Cambodia is different to Thailand and actually reminded me more of India. The roads were awful (for those of you that know my old road in Essex, it was at least five times as bad as that and we travelled on it for hours!) but we were travelling with a nice Swedish man, so that made things more interesting. Crossing the Cambodian border was a nightmare in so many ways - the time it took, the fact it was like we were in a market, the crazy American girl who kept on and on talking to us about trees!!!! We got to see Angkor Wat though which was amazing and just radiated history! Went right to the top which was an achievement in itself as this involved a steep and unsafe climb up very small stairs. We came back to Thailand a couple of days later and went to Ko Samui and then Ko Phi Phi. I really liked Ko Phi Phi. It was very picturesque and there was a nice busy atmosphere about it. We went snorkelling here. Great achievement for me because I get a bit scared of the sea and its creatures! We got to see lots of beautiful fish and also Maya beach, the beach from the film "The Beach", which is as beautiful as you think it is. We also saw a wedding on Long Beach, on Ko Phi Phi, which was nice (we have actually seen at least one wedding in every place we have been to!). Next we headed to Malaysia. Our first stop was Penang and then we went to Kuala Lumpur. The Twin towers, in KL, are very impressive and offer great views of KL. We also went to the Lake Gardens here where I fed the deer and where Kate and I went on a pedalo!! The water was disgusting!! One thing that we have come across in Asia is that a lot of Asian people do not know how to use the toilet - as they are used to standing up and going over holes in the ground, when they see a western toilet they think they have to stand on the seat!! There are actually instructions informing people how to use toilets correctly! Singapore is a great place too. Lots of shopping to be had! The best bit about it was the night safari that we went on. It was amazing. The animals weren't caged off but things were more open. We could actually get very close to the animals and there were a lot to be seen. I recommend this to everyone who goes to Singapore. I loved the giraffes! Posted by smelly kelly on February 27, 2005 11:16 AM
