It's not uncommon to hear about stories of the abundance and quality of meat in Argentina, so I wasn't really surprised to see it take such a prominent place on most menus here. In fact, I relish (no pun intended) the ability to eat a very large steak dinner for only $2 at any time of the day. Thus far, I've eaten only one meal which was sans meat, and that, sad as it sounds, was during the Super Bowl. I suppose its a sign of just how different my life is that the one time when it should be assured that meat will be consumed en masse, I eat a vegetarian meal. It's hard to complain, though, since I had to go where the game was showing, and since it was up against a soccer match between the national teams of Argentina and Brazil, my options were limited. I dare say there weren't many bars in the US showing the Argentina v. Brazil match during the Super Bowl. Despite the prevalance of meat in all things here (I'm pretty sure I saw a salt shaker earlier that was stuffed with ground beef), tonight for dinner, the owners of our hostel cooked up a shockingly delicious homage to crazed carnivores everywhere...meat pizza. I'm not referring to a pizza covered, or even stuffed, with all sorts of yummy meat toppings. These are commonplace everywhere. No, this was a pizza which, instead of a being made on a crust, was made on a cut of beef. When first posed, I thought it must be a small steak with some cheese and tomato sause on top. Nope. The steak covered a full pizza plate and in places was as much as 3/4" thick. I'll never look at meat lover's pizza the same. I had three pieces and a baked potato. Viva Argentina! Comments
