March 25, 2005One night in San Sebastian
So after leaving the boys in Madrid and after spending a couple days in the Uni town of Salamanca I decided to travel to San Sebastian. This was on a travel tip from darling Sanne. Took a 6hr day train from Salamanca and arrived in San Sebastian around 16:30pm. Naturally, being 'una persona' I thought it would be dead easy to get a room in a 'Pension' (guesthouse). Must be heaps of them available I thought to myself. So I left the station, walked into town with my pack, found the tourist office and obtained a list of accomodation joints. Three hours later, my back and neck were hurting quite a bit and I was still bedless. Must have vistited 20 or so places. Easter. And what do the Spaniards to at Easter... they all go to San Sebastian. The whole city was completly booked. The only room I did find was for $E20 and the floor was at a freaking angle. I mean the room was sloping. I felt sea-sick after being in the room for just 2 minutes. The landlord was a prick as well. And it was the size of a matchbox.. insane. Worst place ive seen all trip. Eventually, found a double-room for $E40. I was about to pass out at this point. But the room was only for 1 night, as people had booked it for the next three days. So the saga continued. After spending another couple hours that night and about $E5 on the phone I must have visited/phoned 90% of the pensions in San Sebastian and was still bedless. So the plan was to leave San Sebastian the next day and maybe head to Bilboa (1hr away) or Zaragoza (4hrs away). After getting up at 8am and heading to the Train Station it turns out all the trains out of San Sebastian were full as well. Not feeling very happy at this point. So headed back to the Pension to pack my gear and was about to head to the Bus station when the owner told me she had a single room. I had to ask her to repeat it about three times. Turns out someone had cancelled. I thanked her and headed to my room and slept for 5 hours. San Sebastian is a beautiful city though. It feels as though im in Austria. Thanks Sanne.. good tip. Going to get very drunk tonight. Partying away the next night with the locals was better. Comments
