February 19, 2005First Pictures from Mexico City
(silvena) We have had our first day as real tourists today. And it shows...we are dead tired in an internet cafe writing ... because we can not walk any more. We followed religiously the recommendations of our favourite Lonely Planet and walked the recommended route. Here a a few pictures from the day: The Iglesia de San Francisco, in front of which this picture is taken is a remnant of a Franciscan convent, in the heart of Mexico City and not far from our hotel. View image While trying to enter the Palacio Nacional, where some famous Diego Rivera murals are preserved, amidst the busiest place in town, the Zocalo, we across a froup of sweet Mexican kids (small burrito-eaters, as Michal calls them) on their way to the bus, probably going to school. View image The heart of Mexico City is undoubtedly the so called Zocalo, meaning base where a huge Mexican flag stands and every Mexican in the city seemingly tries to sell you something. Behind me is the Catedral Metropolitana, a huge cathedral build on some Aztec ruins and supposedly sinking because of this. View image (michal) Last but not least picture of today: Diego Riviera`s murals - I think that everybody who has seen the famous movie "Frida" telling the true story of Frida Kahlo, the biggest Mexican paintress, has also heard about Diego her husband. The murals are simply amazing - huge, impressive, reflecting all of the improtant times for Mexico - Aztec empire, Spanish conquest, and finally the capitalism and glorious communism! Yes, yes, Diego was a strongly beliving el camerado, whose ideas were reflected in his paintings - that is mainly why the Rockefellers tore down the already commissioned mural just because there was Tovarishch Lenin in it! Well, Diego you were so wrong, but still you are one of my favourite painters! View image That is it for today ! More in two days ! Comments
can't wait to see more!!! :) I think I know what Michał felt looking for his favourite artists' stars ;) frankly I would prefer Jimi Hendrix's or Peter Gabriel's, but well... I just wish I were there with you ;) and all those guitars... my heaven... I remember when I saw "Frida" for the first time I was really astonished by Frida's and Diego's paintings - are you going to organize some picture-watching event after you come back? :) Posted by: uOSIu on February 19, 2005 08:33 PMThis is such a great idea. I love being able to "travel" with you - it's a great break from bar exam studying. Please keep posting if you have the time and energy - and safe travels! Posted by: Irina on February 20, 2005 03:47 PMHurray from Orange Happy Kyiv! I am staying after work to read your adventures. Pls. continue.. We had a Diego Riviera's huge mural at my college library, and to be frank with you (Michal), I hated it! Somehow his style was too Soviet (don't know who is "drinking with the devil every night", he-he). Yet, Frida Cahlo is just amazing. Posted by: Assia on February 23, 2005 07:53 PM |
