October 25, 2005Stary, Stary Night...
Written Joural October 8th - Massai Mara - Kenya It is a beautiful night in Massai Mara, with a million of stars in the sky..the air is clean and crisp as it hits your face...the wilderness of animals seems far in the distance except for few dogs barking, all seem to be asleep and home is just a few hundred meters walk away from this upscale lodge....or so it seems. Maybe it was the beer, maybe it was the dim lit flashlight, maybe it was the darkness of Africa, maybe it was the sound of leaves rustling, maybe it was farther than we thought..but whatever it was we did not listen to the hotel attendant as he ran after us saying he could not let us walk home. We did not stop, we did not listen and we did not find home. We laughed as we returned to the lodge, the curiousity of the workers again could be felt. They just said, "you went AND came back"....as if surprised. Frankly, my thought was what else were we to do? After some discussion, we located an escort, TWO in fact, two Massai Mara Warriors...all was well. Regardless our second trip was not filled with laughter or talk but only the sound of the quick steps of our excorts. The speed was only overshadowed by the club held in their hand for protection. A club which is typically concealed in their belt, this night was out and ready for attack. What were we thinking? -In Africa If two Massai Mara Warriors are frightened and ready for battle with a wooden club.....what the heck is a city girl going to do, with a long dress on, without any direction of home and flip-flops on? At that moment, with a questioning look on my face...the slightest feeling of fear crept into my bones....and then I was home! It was a beautiful night after all!!! Comments
