and goodbye Ko Samui too

Left Ko Samui from the nice little airport, with its palm roof sheds and where I had the best food from any airport I have tried - Tom Yam soup.
There is a hefty departure tax of Baht 500 but the good thing is the flight left early - amazingly - and took only 45 minutes to Krabi.

There is a monopoly at Krabi airport for taxi transportation to any resort. This is another Baht 500 (about 7 pounds sterling).

Ao Nang could be mistaken for a resort in Germany, because that is the language you hear all the time. There are a large number of Scandinavians here too. Some I spoke to have been here seven times - it is their regular destination in Thailand.
The bay here is like a fairy tale place, but the strip of the little town is a bit tatty with nothing but souvenir shops, tour agencies and tailors.

The locals seem a little less smiley, perhaps they are exhausted by tourists.
But the beach at Rai Ley is the best I have ever seen. There are picture book islands in the viridian and silver sea, and the huge cliffs rise from the water, ochre, cream, indian red, and black streaks, with stalactites (?) hanging down, and topped with green trees and shrubs. Dotted in the cliff sides are huge caves. You can hire a little canoe or kayak and paddle roundthe foot of the islands, where the overhang is eroded by millions of years of sea.

At the end of Rai Ley beach is a large cave with two little shrines - it is called the Princess cave. The princess is cloaked in a fine pink gauzy scarf and garlands are all round the shrines, mostly yellow and red paper flowers. At the foot of the shrine are piles and piles of wooden phalluses (or phalli?), some plain but mostly painted pink and red in the appropriate places. They are all shapes and sizes, some quite huge. Feel I should find out a bit more about the local beliefs!
