Exposure to radiation = a day in bed

Friday, July 11th, 2008

Is modern medicine, beneficial? Yes. Pain free? No!  Thanks to several months of intense stress at my previous job, I’ve developed some pains, which prompted my doctor to order an ultrasound.  Ultrasounds, I can handle, but thanks to a possible Cyst on my spleen, I was then booked in for a CT Scan.I’ve had one of these scans before and it was not pleasent.  After the first 2 scans, the contrast media was put in my system, I was slowly going through the machine, when I started to panic.  I couldn’t breath and it seemed like forever before I was pulled out, at which point my stomach decided to purge itself while I was laying there, on my back… nice image huh!Needless to say, I was a little nervous this time of repeating myself.  I chose to close my eyes this time.  After the 2nd scan we had to pause for my stomach to settle down before adding the contrast media and putting me through again.  This time went fairly well and I walked out, as clean as when I went in.  It wasn’t until 20 mins later that I was feeling really ill.

I think it was the combination of radiation and my ativan that made me so grogy.  I could hardly maintain enough energy to walk, let alone talk properly.  Within minutes of arriving home, I was in bed, where I passed out for the next 4.5hrs.  Even then I was still completely wiped out.  I can’t imagine what it’s like to have constant radiation exposure.  I just pray that this was the absolute LAST time!

With that out of the way, perhaps I can get on with my travel and moving plans.
