Yard Sales and the cheap people who shop them!

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

I have to say, people, are just funny and annoying in general.  With moving to Niagara Falls in 2 days time, my apartment is now packed up, and I’m in the process of liquifying everything I own.

So I placed an ad in the paper, put out some signs and had a yard sale yesterday.  The day was PERFECT, hot, but not too hot and there was a steady stream of people.  Damn, I own too much crap!  Although the day ended with my face and arms a deep shade of red, it went pretty well.  Still, as I reflected on the day, I had to laugh at some of the people who showed up.

This conversation was one of my favs…we’ll call the guy Fred…

Fred: How low will you go on your DVD’s?

Me: $3.00

Fred: $2.00?

Me: $3.00

Fred: But I’ve already seen this movie, $2.00?

Me: Nope, $3.00

Fred: There’s a thumb print on it, $2.50

Me: Use some windex and wipe it off, it’s $3.00.

With that he put it down and walked away.  Maybe I should have relented and sold it, but there was something annoying about the whole thing, and I just didn’t want to.

At another point a couple showed up and the wife was particularily hillarious.  For some reason she started talking about how her doctor is suddenly wanting her to lose weight.  She started going on about how her doctor is one of those “reformed skinny people”, how before she would smoke, drink and eat whatever she wanted, but now that she’s joined “Jenny Craig”, she’s turned into this annoying person who suddenly wants people to lose weight.

I have never laughed so hard, this woman went on for like 5 minutes on this rant.  What made it funnier was that Amanda ( a personal trainer by profession) was sitting on the porch, biting her tongue before she said something nasty.  It was priceless.

Moving day…

Sounds boring right?  I mean, every one knows what happens when a person moves, you pack, you load, you move.  I rented a U-haul Cargo van to move my furniture from Cardston to Lethbridge for the yard sale I’m having with Amanada tomorrow.   That meant that 2 girls were loading a 7.5 ft sofa, a queen bed, stone tables, cedar chest and more.

The sofa was the biggest challenge.  With a length of 7.5ft and width of about 2ft, trying to get it out the door was a serious challenge.  However with some adjustments (taking the legs off), we moved it out the door, up the stairs and into the back of the van.  Next, the queen mattress.  Like the sofa, this is no cheap mattress, its big, heavy and bulky.  Oh, and did I mention its also white!

With a bit of effort we managed to get the mattress to the van, that was the easy part.  Now we had to try and wedge it inside, over the sofa and then down.  We pushed, we pulled, I stood under it with my head and we tried to manuvre it that way.  Finally I went in the side of the van and pulled, while Amanda pushed.  After several minutes we finally got it into place.  Within a couple seconds I hear Amanda give this insane kind of laugh.  I thought she was happy we finally got it in.  When I asked her, she said she was a little stuck.

I was not prepared for what I saw as I walked around the outside of the van to the back.  I saw her legs sticking straight out, twisted together and I lost it.  I fell to the ground and howled with laughter.  I have never in my life seen anything so funny.  I couldn’t look at her without dying with laughter.  She had some how been wedged between the sofa and mattress with her arms and legs sticking out.  After several minutes of gut wrenching laughter , I ran for my camera to capture the moment forever.

We may have been completely exhausted after two trips to Cardston and back, but I have never had so much un moving.  Not to mention the gourmet dinner her fiance JR had waiting for us! Oh SOOOO Yummy!!
