April 07, 2005Thailand
3rd April: Today we got the ferry to Ko Phangan it took about 1 ½ hrs to get there, we hadn’t booked any accommodation so we jumped on a taxi to Aow Chaloklum bay and got a Long Boat to Haad Khuat(Bottle Beach). This bay can only be reached by boat. These long boats are all over Thailand they are about 25ft long and double ended and made of timber, to propel them along they have a diesel engine mounted at the stern of the boat above the gunnels, which is mounted on a hingened, swiveling bracket and has an 8ft shaft that angles down to the water. The engines are about 15/20HP and started with a crank handle, you can see some of these boats traveling at mad speeds and you can definitely hear them!
