India

KERELA, Fort Cochin
We boarded the express train to Fort Cochin at 9.00pm, we could not get the 2nd classA/C seats and the only seats available were standard sleeper. We shared our compartment with 4 other people, we all had our own bunk. As it was an over night train the time passed along quickly. The trip was 1200km which took 15 hrs. We met a nice elderly Swiss couple who were on a 4 month world back packing tour( I hope we will be able to go back packing when we are in our sixities), while we waited for the train to arrive we had tea and they told us about there travels in Brazil and Chile. We met up after the train journey and travelled together to Fort cochin, we had to get a ferry out to Fort Cochin Island, Cochin was at one time Run by the portuguese and this can be seen in many of the buildings and churches.

That evening we went to a KATHAKALI play, this is a very old type of Indian acting were no words are spoke and everything is communicated with dance, facial expression, the hands and music. A play takes around 6 hours to act out so they only do a section of the play for tourists. The make up, costums and facial expressions were amazing. After we met up with the swiss couple for dinner on the roof of hotel. The food here is no-were near as good as it was in Goa.

Monday 21st, Had a walk around the town and visited the oldest european church in India St. Francis, it was built by fransican friars who travelled over with the Portuguese it dates back to 16 century. Our flight was depting at 11.15pm so we had most of the day to take in the sights. We booked a taxi to the airport wich was about 1 1/2 hours away, tomorrow we will be in Thailand!!!!.
