April 20, 2005Recoleta Cemetery
This is the Graveyard of Argentine society, and probably the most expensive real estate in Latin America - it´s said that you can live like a king or be buried at Recoleta. Unfortunately, with the financial crisis of late, many of the tombs (Recolta, and most cemeteries here, are all rows of tombs. Not a green spot to be found)have fallen into severe disrepair There´s even some that no longer have locks on the doors, leading your average curious tourist (no, not me - I have more respect for the dead) to be able to descend the stairs to the tombs´ crypt on the lower level. Recoleta´s most famous attraction is the Tomb of Eva Peron, or Evita as she´s affectionately known. One an indication of how exclusive Recoleta cemetery is is that Evita´s husband, former 3-time President Juan Peron, who´s arguably the most important person in Argentinian history, isn´t even buried here. Evita only got in because her father had a family plot. One of many plaques on Evita´s tomb. My favorite attraction, however, was the herd of cats Recoleta the neighborhood is pretty interesting in and of itself. More on that next.
