For Whom the Blog Tolls

It is interesting to blog for no one. I am aware that I am writing for myself and perhaps for a false audience of blog readers. Since I know of only two people who may actually read this entry (not including myself), why don't I write for them? But I don't.

I am not writing a journal or a diary, quite. I seem to write for people who might happen past the internet site and see my page. This is absurd, since no one is doing that. How do I know? Because I think the passersby would leave strange or irate comments.

So what, and for whom, do I blog?

Perhaps this is a 21st century existential question. I am only the most recent one to wonder about it, I realize. And I can't answer it, honestly. Neither can I answer the question honestly, if you receive my meaning.

I have told myself I am writing a travel blog, in which my travels are excruciatingly local. But that is simply a place to hang my hat, so to speak. What the hell kind of hat am I wearing? I seem to need someone else to tell me. It's good to keep your readers in mind, isn't it? From all that I know about blogging and about writing anything, writing needs a voice. And a voice needs a listener, or writing is just an exercise in tolling a bell which does not make a sound.

Forgive me while I ponder this, and make my efforts to get better at the blogification experiment which is now underway. And if you are reading, thank you.
