October 14, 2004Down or Out?
In the Boston GLOBE yesterday morning, an area nun was quoted as saying that "God is a Red Sox fan." If that is the case, then WHAT is that God thinking? Pedro pitched game 2 and had excellent stuff after the first 6-7 pitches. But the team produced the big nada to support his outing, and here in the New England autumn, we're down again. I await Friday evening, when the team will be back at Fenway Park. Until then, who can travel? I must stay at home and count on some baseball diamond miracles. On the local talk radio station WEEI, show hosts are discussing the post-game comments by Pedro last night. When asked how he felt while 60,000 people chanted "Who's my Dad-dy?", Pedro responded that he felt fine about it, and in a way, was even proud. Dumbstruck reporters were silent as he talked about the distance he has travelled in his life: from poverty in the Dominican, to standing on the mound in Yankee Stadium, the center of all attention. Pedro was very serious, even emotionally moved as he told the media that he felt proud to have had his opportunities, and would pitch his heart out if he's asked to. My take on the comments is that they were, in the sports cliche, Heartfelt. But the radio is clacking away right now as the angry hosts are launching theories about suspicious motives for Pedro's comments. They say that Pedro's just trying to impress the Yankees so he can move there next season. They say that he's lost his marbles, and that reminiscing about mango trees on the Dominican proves that he's coming apart mentally. They are not convincing, though they are provocative. Now there will be 10-15 minutes of local commercials for cars, trucks, furniture and for different shows featured on this station. I'm just thinking that Pedro is all right with me. I think he'll be pitching again on short rest, and he will be dominant. In addition, the Red Sox will be winning the game, and there are many good contests to come. Let's go, Red Sox! Comments
