August 04, 2004Inca Trail Day 2 - to Dead Woman´s Pass!
The second day was the ´tough´day. And it was!! It was uphill, uphill, uphill, through a humid forest, and more uphill! On the way up, I met a girl from Poland who was living in England. We chatted while making our way up the crazy Incan stairs. I hiked most of the way by myself, as some of the group was either faster or slower than me. I finally got to the ´push tea´site, and was so excited that I was not the last! At that point, we were more than half way to the top. Well, from there, we went uphill more..and more..and more. I could see the top, but yet it was so far away. I just took it slowly as I had not hired a porter that day (cost too much), and was carrying 9 kg of my own gear. I met up with Ravi on the uphill swing, and we went up the last part together. Everyone who was waiting at the top clapped as we got to the top of Dead Woman´s Pass..ahhh..an accomplishment!!! After that, it was downhill to camp. The downhill was really rough on my knees as there were steep stone steps. Then it started sprinkling, then raining, so the stones were extremely slippery. Finally got to the campsite. It is very high in the mountains. We were camping in and above the clouds. After dinner, we looked outside and were amazed at what we saw -- the moonlit night. Snowy mountains in the background, mountains to our sides and clouds below us. It was a very surreal setting. Comments
