July 26, 2004Sacred Valley of the Incas
Yesterday, I went on an all day tour of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The views were absolutely stunning! We first went to a small town were there was a market. They said it was the cheapest of the markets, but it really was not! Then we headed on to the Archaeological Park in Pisac. This was beautiful. We walked along ancient Incan trails, and up steps with steep cliffs on the side. Then walked up more steps to the top. The views of the valleys were amazing. Too bad I cant upload pictures! Then we went to the Pisac markets. Just another market. I had to use the bathroom, and I paid 50 centimos to use a porcelain hole in the ground! We ended up leaving a Japanese guy behind in Pisac, but no one noticed. Had lunch in Urubamba, where we noticed that the Japanese guy was missing. After that, we headed on to Ollantaytambo, an Incan terraced landscape. You could see snowy mountians, green fertile mountains, and Incan storage houses. We ran into the Japanese guy here. It ends up that he was able to get a combi from Pisac to Ollantaytambo. That is good, because he could only speak a little bit of English and a little bit of Spanish! We then headed off to Chinchero in the evening - the markets were still going on, but they were quite expensive. I think the prices in Cusco were better! The guy sitting next to me on the bus was pretty cool. His name is Santiago, a 7th grade math teacher from Bogota, Columbia. At only 23 years old, he had stories of being in the Columbian Army, trekking in Nepal, India, China, and Thailand. His English was very good as well. He also was really excited that he saw the number 1 Columbian soccer fan. This fan has a mohawk, and his hair is painted in different colors. Ironically enough, I saw this guy in another city before, and in the Pisac markets as well. Didnt know he was a well known guy! Also met an English guy named Patrick, who thinks he is going to be on my Inca Trail trip as well. He said that he is leaving the same day, and he thinks he is going with SAS. So I guess I will find out during my briefing! Comments
