Jon the provider

Battling against the rain, we managed to make it to the last point on our West Australian tour, Cape Le Grand National Park. It is 50 K to the East of Esperance and had been recommended to us by the volunteer hosts (from Aberdeen) at the Shannon NP campsite. It was a warm sunny day by the time we arrived.

There was a campsite right on the beach, which we were told was full when we entered the NP. We only managed to get a place by virtue of the fact that the people who had set up camp there earlier had promptly taken it down again when the rain had started. Little did they realise that it was only going to last a couple of hours… Our inherited spot also happened to be the quaintest (I can’t believe I used that word!) of all of the bays with low trees providing shade and a homely feel. We had forgotten that it was Easter weekend and everyone would be taking holidays and places would be full, but fortune had smiled on us and continued to do so as we rushed out to stand on the rocks with our fishing rods. Not half an hour into it, Jon had caught a decent sized Skipjack Trevally for our tea. The whole process of killing it was panicky and heart wrenching, made worse by the fact that the thing continued to twitch and flick for some time after it had been smacked in the eye with a stone.

After verifying (a little late) that it was of a large enough size not to threaten the population, we felt a little less guilty about preparing and eating the fish. It was pretty delicious and yet another reason for me to feel proud of my hunter-gatherer boyfriend.
