May 05, 2004Would you like fries with that?
I'm still here in Delhi... why? I do not know. It is muggy and stuffy but really what city in India is not? I once read somwhere that America is devoid of smells. I think Canada should be included in that. I mean really, if someone were to ask what smells are distinct to Canada... I could not truly answer. Would it be the manure from the farms? The freshly cut lawns in the suburbs? The smell of a spring rain shower? The thing is those smells come and go. They're seasonal smells. Here the smells are endless and rich... either good or bad. It's a mixture of wonderment, beauty and ugly that is whipped together to create the smell of... well, India. A recipe of 2 parts of overipe fruit, wet dogs and cows, a pinch of masala (curry spices), a dash of incense, mixed with exhaust fumes and simmered in a cloud of humidity following you wherever you go. Then again... maybe it's just me... According to the comments my track record for showering isn't all that great...! Today has been a scorcher. Apparently just before I arrived in Delhi there had been a few days of rain that had cool things down quite a bit ('cooled down' is an understatement)... today the heat has returned with a vengence! It feels like the sun is sucking the breath from my lungs whenever I walk up to the rooftops. Rooftops seem to be the place to find peace in Delhi. It's where to seek refuge from the daily traffic in the Market. But today I found myself seeking refuge in a McDonalds... ACK! I'm embarressed to say that, yes, I went into a McDodalds just to have a milkshake and feel the icy (aka: A/C) temperatures! Only 35Rps for a shake. Meer pennies back home. No beef on the menu, mostly fish, chicken and veggie stuff (or at least simulated!). I've become full American today (except for the showering bit and the fact that my partner in crime is a tourist from England!) because I also went to the cinema and purchased tickets for the newest Sharuk kahn film. I'll be at the matinee tomorrow. For those of you who don't know Sharuk Kahn is the most popular and not to mention cutest Bollywood actor. Yes, I've got a bit of a crush... if it weren't for him I probably would have by-passed the cinema entirely. Ah... c'est la vie! Comments
