October 19, 2004A couple of days of organizing
We decided to stay at the eagle 2 guesthouse as it had a good write up in both our guide books and was very close to where I stayed last time (and for a twin room it cost us just over a quid each). We then headed out to find out how much and how long it would take to get a Vietnam visa. The prices varied from 2700-3200 baht. We went to one near our guesthouse, it was run by a pregnant lady with a huge smile who seemed always to be on the verge of laughing (which she did often). She charged 2500 and it would take four days so we took it. We then went back to the guesthouse and booked a couple more nights, it was OK as long as we changed rooms later on (which in the end we didn't have to do). After a wander around the inner city we had a meal and a few to many beers. Up late the next day we decided that for the following day we would go on a trek. So for 700 baht (a tenner) we got one that involved Elephant riding and bamboo rafting as well as visiting a couple of tribes. We then had nothing to do until 11:30pm when the England match started. We headed toward the river passing through a market and then the Flower market. We had a beer on the other side of the river before heading back, we then went to the night market and then on to our local (in which they recognized Dave, but not me and I had been there most days for a week about a week ago, must be his lip ring). We got talking to an elderly American couple who had settled in Chiang Mai after working as an airline pilot trainer in China. At 11pm we headed to the U.N.Irish bar to watch the match. It was surprisingly empty (more people in there when I watch ManU v Boro). The match had no commentary at all, it seemed washed out. Comments
