What games do children play?
What do adults get up to when the needs of the day are taken care of?
How do others rest?
Perhaps one of the more startling discoveries was that in many places people are content to just *be*. To lie on their motorbike or sack of rice and take a nap. To sit with neighbours and chat – there is a plethora of roadside benches (both ornate ones and simple planks of wood), especially in Italy, Greece and Bulgaria.
We saw groups of women huddling over knitting needles in China – were they working or relaxing? It was easier to tell with men – they would sit with a chess board or deck of cards or with pastry in one hand and coffee in the other (the pastries weren’t in China – that was in Greece, where in one town we counted thirty-five people at the cafes, and only two of thme were women).
